To Applebred or not to Applebred?

Okay My friend (fraggster) Has a 1.6 Ghz Applebred and I was gonna get one. Can anyone give me instructions on how to do the 256Kb l2 cache Mod? thanks

Worked for me, but it crashed like mad after a while, had to undo it. Try it with a pencil first so you can easily reverse it.

In some cases they only have 128Kb of cache because the other half was corrupted off of the rack. It reduces the sale impact for AMD, but that's a risk you modders take.

Well, i mean for 30 dollars more you get a processor with 3X more cache and you dont have to mod it!

half? correction, 3/4 disabled 64k vs 256k, not 128k

I think you meant four times more...

There's always the fun of trying to bend the rules of what you're supposed to get, and if you get some free performance even better. Isn't that the point of overclocking and the Radeon 9500np mods?

Haven't tried unlocking the cache yet. Then again I'm pretty happy with my 1.6 Duron the way it is (currently at 11x200, 2200mhz@1.65v). It can probably go even further, but since everything is working so well, I've left it alone. Mine came with the lower multipliers unlocked.

FYI, for those in the Boston, MA area, CPUs from this batch appear to be still available at Microcenter in Cambridge for $39.95. You can buy from them online too, but I don't know where those might be coming from though.

I've got an applebred 1800 that stomps intel chips rated much higher. I've got mine at 13.5x145 running prime stable at 42celcius.

Wasn't there something like a $200 difference between the 9500np and 9700Pro, though? The whole AXP-line is so cheap now, why wouldn't you get a mobile 2500+?
