This question is for anyone who bought or received XP on disk and didn't get it when they bought a computer.

I went from Windows 2000 to XP Pro and I have noticed a good cut in overall speed. From loading programs and other noticeable speed cuts.

Anyone else have this problem?

I just might go back to 2000

I upgraded from 98SE to XP and noticed no difference at the time.

Went from 2000 Pro to XP Pro and the speed is the same on the desktop and 10 times faster when booting.

faster when booting? Win2k boots 1000 times faster on my computer and runs completely stable and super fast...XP sucks in my opinion, 2k is the best Micro$oft OS to date*

*besides DOS :)

I switched to the classic look for XP and I can tell a difference in speed.

Odd

I have a 1 gig athlon and 512 mB of ram so thats not the problem

Yeah, lots faster in booting. I can have Internet Explorer open from pressing the power button in 29 seconds flat. It took me over a minute in 2k...

hey dude xp flys on my pc but it is a fast one.....but i do notice some things like if you turn all the gfx and stuff off...your pc will be 20% or so faster......what makes xp slow on some ppl/s pc is not the cpu or ram really i found out by testing it out that if you use a pci card like ( ati rage pro 16mb) the sys is very slow with all them gfx on....but if you use an agp rage pro 32mb the sys is heck of a lot smother......if you don't know how to trun off some of that gfx then go do this.

goto start go over to my computer....right click goto properties then over to advanced....

XP is actualy faster on my laptop that 2k. Much faster. I don't know why. Boot time is also much faster. I'm using XP Pro. XP Home came with the computer, I took that off and put 2k pro on, it was slower, so I bought XP Pro, since I wanted the enhanced security and mobile computing features.

Tip: don't do an upgrade, backup your data files, then format and clean install.

XP is faster and more stable on my systems than was Win2k sp2.

My WinXP boots fast and is rock stable,it`s quite simple do a clean install of WinXP on the HD and you will see,I will have to give WinXP top marks for best OS right now after a lot of testing with programs and games etc, remember no Microsoft OS is 100% perfect.

If you do all the tweaks pointed to here and turn off the eye candy it should be no slower than Win 2000.

I really can't see any significant speed difference when I came from 2000 to XP except in boot time. Benchmarks and user expereince shows that generally, any pre-2000 OS is gonna be slower than XP, but 2000 will be a tad faster if at all.

Hello everyone! :)

My $0.01 worth, but have seen/used them all since 95...have never seen anything blaze through apps, surfing and installations like XP Pro. Admittedly, I have a pretty fast machine right now, but using my friend's Northwood 2.2 Windows 2K rig for comparison, we just can't believe how fast XP does some things. Think he's getting XP Pro from newegg.com soon.

I've found that as long as you don't have any bad drivers *AND* you have at least 512MB Ram, WinXP is faster than Win2K. It boots MUCH faster than Win2K, even if you only have 256MB. Luckily, I bought 1.5GB Ram when it only cost $150.

I had XP and now Im running 2k. XP had a slightly faster boot time than 2k does but that was after running bootvis. Other than that, Win2k has been faster and, uses less ram.

Is it just me, or does disabling the Luna GUI in WXP make things look extremely ugly?
