STFU. Seriously. Most of the time you don't have a damn clue what you are yelling at, and are in no position to see the apparent 'bad' call. STFU. Unless you want to go out there and try to do a better job, and if you think you can... by all means sign up.

Maybe weak, but sadly true. I can't believe what some of these idiots think is appropriate language and behavior at a kids' game.

the ref's see more than the parents, since the ref's are in the middle of the field, while the parents are at a bad angle on the side
so yes, sometimes there is a small mistake, but a ref will likely see a foul the parents missed

how i so agree with parents needing to STFU
if there is a bad call, let the coach and the players yell :)
that's how i was.. i'd yell when the umps in baseball screwed up, but surprisingly never got kicked out of a game ;)

To any HS coaches trying to recruit players...

Get it through your skulls that some kids (and their parents) don't give a flying fvck about your teams or sports in general for that matter. So, quit badgering our kids to play every chance you get, particularly on parent-teacher nights! We're there to discuss education, not your flippin' goal for a "dream team" or whateverthefvck you've got in your neanderthal head!

Highschool?

Sheeeet... they start as soon as their kids are in a competitive game.

I couldn't believe the parents at the mini-mite hockey games... and they are 6 and under.

regardless if its a good call or not, parents need to behave. Furthermore, fouls are very discretionary. A lot of times its a matter of opinion. What one ref calls another may not. Let the ref call the game, and let the players play. And let the spectators watch. Yelling DOES ABSOLUTELY NO GOOD.

I yell at the referee even if it a legit call. I boo too

if every one was quiet, the game would be boring.

#1 in reasons why I'm not looking forward to when my daughter gets into sports.
What the !@# ever happened to playing for fun and camaraderie, being part of a team all pulling together?
What about letting our kids be kids for a while without adult pressure to PERFORM?

I'm bringing this one back to life

You're a pain in the ass then. Yell encouraging things, dont teach your kids bad sportsmanship.

That's why I am a Donkey!
Seriously..... I am!

really.....Yelling things of encouragement such as " That's Ok Jimmy, I know you will not get called for clipping next time...YAY JIMMY" well, that's stuff you see in pee wee league. High school sports is not the teaching league.

That's why Fans are called Fans...short for Fanatics. I blow an air horn when my son's team scores or makes a big play and I boo when the ref misses a call. That has nothing to do with sportsmanship.

A bad sport would be "Jimmy you suck, can't you hit someone without clipping them?...c'mon"

OP you must be a ref somewhere and screwed a call and got hammered for it by the fans....quitcherbitchin

wrong. They are fans and yell for a reason. Sure sometimes thay have no idea what they are talking about, but when the whole entire town for your football team starts chanting asshole at the ref during a really bad call during a championship game, thats what the atmosphere is all about!

If you want to encourage sportsmanship fine, but you should not be teaching it at a high school level...(meaning it better have already been taught)

I agree, I think the OP has reffed, made a bad call, and got hammered

Yes, I have reffed. And sure Ive made a bad call, but EVERY ref has made a bad call. Probably a lot. Thats not the point though. The point is the fans need to stick to watching/cheering and not HARRASSING like many fans do.

First of all, you do not understand what it is like to be a ref, until you actually do it. Its not as easy as it seems. And its a thankless job. However, Im not complaniing. Cause I don't really care what others think, it doesn't affect me in anyway. However, when fans start getting violent/yelling profanitys/harrassing refs/etc. That is WAY out of hand, and should not be tolerated.

I recently did a varsity girls soccer game where we had to not only stop the game to control the crowd, but also had to throw 4 girls out of the game. And for pretty serious infractions. One girl got up after a called and said "Are you fvcking kidding me?" Why do you think she said this? Its because all the fans were yelling after EVERY SINGLE CALL. No matter if it was good or not, and I assure you, the game was not that badly. It was a competitive game, with high tension. And AWFUL parents who don't know how to behave properly at a sporting event, which rubbed off onto the players and created a very hostile environment, which ultimately resulted in two girls getting in a shoving match (both being ejected) and another girl throwing one girl to the ground by her hair.

If you even think this is proper behavior than you should not be allowed at sporting events.

Oh, and for the record I was not the head ref during that game. I simply ran the lines and only had to make calls on in/out of bounds and offsides. (For the most part). And as you could imagine, every call I made got a crazy response from the crowd to. "ARE YOU BLIND, THAT WAS OUT ON GREEN, YOU SUCK BOOO!!! WE WANT A NEW REF..etc... " Funny, they are a good 50 yards away and at an angle, yet somehow they can see the ball better than me. Some people are just ignorant. Oh, one last thing. Most of the time the fans were SCREAMING about rules they didn't understand. Ala, stoppage time in soccer. Yes. There is ALWAYS time added onto the end of a half, yet the fans went nuts when the ref didn't stop the half exactly when the scoreboard showed 0.00 left. Not like the scoreboard is the official time anyway, but even if it was it cannot account for stoppage time.

I have reffed 13-14 year old hockey before, trust me I know the experience. And the answer to your rant, is one of your own. Ignore the fans and ref the game as you see it, no need to tell the parents to clam down, even if they do not know what they are talking about. Sure things can get out of hand, and that warrents a stoppage of play and a warning. Yet the way you described a situation in the original post does not warrent that type of action.

Hell, the ref that made that horrible all in the Steelers game got a brick thrown through his window, and that was out of line. But parents yelling and screaming about something they do not understand that their kid is envolved in is natural.

Oh, I agree. I do ignore it. When I do a game I just let people say whatever they want, but not all people have the personality to do that. Not to mention that the parents create a hostile environment which SHOULD NOT be allowed. I can say with 100% confidence the only reason the game got out of hand is because of the crowd starting it and the parents/coaches leading by example. The players learn by example. They say "Are you fvcking kidding me?" to the ref because they heard their parents/coaches show that kind of disrespect and get away with it.

Also, there are strict rules regarding highschool sportsmanship that the parents/coaches/players are all required to abide by. Unfortunately, those rules aren't always enforced as strictly as I think they should be. I have no problem with fans yelling encouraging things, or booing a bad call once in awhile but when the fans go to the point of harrassment, then that is out of line.

I did a game last night that was a very mild game, especially in comparison. However after the game as the refs (myself and 2 others) started walking off the field one of the fans approached us. He started off by asking a question regarding a call, apparently he didnt understand the rule/call so he started to get a bit aggressive/yelling. This is AFTER the game as we are walking to our cars, and is IMO completely inappropriate for a parent to do. You watch the game, we call the game. Thats it and thats all.

Of course the parents don't know what the rules are....it's soccer!

J/K OP your example is spot on, but you get paid decently for the job and having to deal with that kind of game once in a while comes with the territory.

are you a "tight" ref that calls everything or are you the type that let's them play and call the obvious stuff?
