To AMD or not to AMD

I've been a diehard Intel guy since the says of the 8086s. Over time I realized that Intels are really overrated and overpriced and decided to go for AMDs. Well here is my problem...

In the recent days its more of a game to bring out a slightly faster processor than a better one. I don't know anyone who has the new core AMD. The reviews I read by Mr Shimpi were informative but made me wonder whether I should get the new Thoroughbred core or stick with the old Palaminos. The prices for the Thoroughbreds aren't even in my ballpark right now, but the Palaminos are becoming more affordable each day.

Does anyone actually have the new AMDs and if so would they rate it better than the old ones. I really don't want to get an Intel since I lost hope on them a while back.

Thanks in advance.

i think it depends if u want to overclock or not.. i think there were alotta reports that the tbreds were very OC friendly... some say otherwise, but more seem to say the first..

i htink the tbreds give off less heat also cuz they use a .13 micron..so its smaller in and dissapates lesser heat...

so its sorta up to u..performance wise i think its the same

personally i would get something like the 1900+ or the 2000+ and then in a few months it will be very easy to just drop in a faster cpu when the prices come down

Nope...I have seen hardly anyone with a good successful oc of a tbred....I mean if they were I am sure I would have seen someone bragging in here to go along with the p4 northwoods...THe chip is a dog and there was an article that was listed last week that confirmed amd was having a bit of a problem with the transition to the .13 micron chips and already had made some changes....Doesn't sound much like a successful chip to me...

Wrong, again.....The tbred has smaller surface area for the core thus actually is running hotter in most instances since there is less area to transfer heat away from core...IN theory your statement may have been true, but in amd's case this is not necessarily the truth.

It really doesn't matter at the moment. Both CPU's have their pluses and minuses.

I will be going back to AMD soon though.

My opinion: if you're overclocking, get an Intel, if not then get an AMD. To me, it's that simple. A year ago (maybe two) AMD was the real champ for performance and Intel got really bloated with their egotistical pricing of the P3. However, the NEW (read: Northwood) P4's are the real deal, and at 2.5 Ghz and above they're untouchable by anything AMD at the moment.

I used to think the same thing, but its not quite that simple, anymore. The recent stepping 1600+s (AGOGA, AROIA) are reaching 1.8GHz+ (XP2200+), with very little voltage increase, which is a 25%+ OC and the overall cost is about $100 less than with a similar 1.8A OC rig. While it still won't be able to match a 1.8A OC'd to 2.8GHz, it does let the extremely budget concious among us in on all the OC fun. But I agree, if you got the money to spend a P4 OC rig is still better.

actually, u can still get a 1.6A for $160? thats pretty damn affordable for a chip that does 2.4 ghz... and its anyone's fault for not getting one earlier at $135...

Just wait when the 2.53GHz drops to $250 with the release of the 2.66Ghz and 2.8GHz, and you will be biting your tongue. 😀
