any help or suggestions would be appreciated...

I'm looking for solo pieces- songs that sound good unaccompanied, but not necessarily written expressly in that regard. In the 2nd year of college, a lot of stress tends to build up, and I'd like to vent it through music, as alternative methods have proven either self-destructive or ineffective. My musical background consists of sixteen years of private lessons (thirteen of those years with different orchestral/chamber groups as well), the past six of which being with a great teacher/mentor. The last pieces I worked on with her were Saint-Saens' Introduction and Rondo Capriccioso, Wieniawski's Scherzo-Tarantella, Franck's Sonata, and Sarasate's Zigeunerweisen. I haven't practiced regularly in the past year, so my technical dexterity is rusty (something to keep in mind with your suggestions ;))...so I'd like something that would work well as a stress release, sounds good, and is enjoyable to practice and play. Maybe I'm just reaching...but I would welcome all suggestions.

Thanks very much!

From what you've listed, you're way beyond my proficiency level, but I always like to play Meditaition on Thais. Easy to play, extremely relaxing (for me at least). If you want more technical pieces I'd have to ask my hardcore violinist friend, since what she plays is always insanely hard.

I wish I had kept up with violin more, but since I have horrible attitude about practicing, I gave up on private lessons shortly before college. I still participate in the college orchestra though. Mebbe you could try that out? The music we're playing is pretty difficult, but more or less enjoyable to play. I'm going to bomb my playing test tonight though...

thanks for the suggestions/bumps.....keep'em coming! :D

Chinaman, Meditation is a great piece..one of my favorites. I thought about joining the orchestra here, but it's two nights a week for 3(?) hours..a little more time consuming than I can handle right now. I wish you luck in your playing test; just relax...playing is so much easier when you're not all tense. (I have yet to be completely relaxed before I play in front of ANYone...) =] ..you'll do fine.

Lakers, cobalt, thanks for the bumps...it's good to know that classical music, whether performed or listened to, is appreciated..

This isn't a solo-piece... but unless my memory's totally playing tricks on me, the violin solo from Scheherazade (sp) just popped in my head when you talked about something stress releasing. I can still vividly remember looking over at him during the concert and seeing him totally in tears... damn, was that moving.

When I >used< to play, I found it relaxing to put a CD in and play along. Didn't matter if I was playing part of the orchestral-part, or the solo part of a concerto. When you close your eyes, you can sorta imagine yourself there.

And if you think a year's layoff makes you rusty, imagine what 10 years does!! Last time I was in a orchestra was 1st year in college (10 years ago) and I've only changed my strings once in the past decade.

solo works only? why?
definitely Bach sonatas and partitas...
Paganini caprices...
Ysaye sonatas...

not sure if these would work well as a stress release though.
have fun :D
