I have done the old pencil connections on several durons and tbirds and never had much of a problem. this morning I ran across an article over at http://www.overclockers.com/ about the type of pencil you might be using and it characteristics.
Interesting read, true or not could not tell ya but it made sense!
SUMMARY: Penciling in the L1 bridges works sort of OK; the reason is that graphite is a RESISTOR, not a great conductor of electricity.
