To all those deal makers: if you had $1K to spend on a camera...

If you had a grand to spend on a digital camera for work (sports medicine clinic), what would you buy?

It's 10D and you're not going to get it for $1000. If you need one right now look for a used D60. If you can wait a month or so get a 300D. It has the same sensor as the 10D, and will come bundled with a lens or two for less than a grand. Can't beat that with a stick.

Thanks!
I like your website. You know you've taken great pictures when someone like me takes a look at the spider section and starts to get that uncomfortable feeling from staring at such creepy-crawlies.

Bottom Line
  • If you want a long lens zoom 5-megapixel camera, either model is very hard to beat. I don't know of another camera that can best it overall, dollar for value. - Peter iNova
Digital Photography DSC-F717 Review
  • "...Even a year on from my DSC-F707 review I find myself unable to name a new five megapixel prosumer digital camera which takes better pictures than the DSC-F717, and that is saying a lot."
Steve's Digicams F717 Review
  • "...I find it safe to say none will out-perform the F717. From the high resolution 5MP 2/3" imager and the ultra-sharp Zeiss lens to the robust and accurate image processing, this camera is sure to satisfy even the most demanding of users..."
Imaging Resource F717 Review
  • "...you've got an "enthusiast" camera that stacks up against anything on the market. Sony innovations like NightShot and NightFraming are just further icing on the cake. Despite its sophistication though, the F717 manages to remain a very user-friendly and approachable camera - There's no reason for a novice to pass it by in favor of a lesser model, as its full-auto mode is as easy to use to use as anything out there."

  • Armed with high-quality Carl Zeiss? optics and shutter speeds of up to 1/2000 second in auto mode, the Sony DSC-F717 produces stellar results, even in the most demanding of shooting situations...

For those who haven?t handled a camera of this design before it?s surprisingly natural...

Build quality is excellent, it?s finished off to the finest detail and everything feels very solid and robust...

Still the best resolution of current five megapixel digital cameras...

Fast AF, improved ability to select AF area, low light AF good Proportional by-wire zoom ring, works well High quality, sharp and very fast 5x optical zoom lens Fast startup and operational times, short write times Swivel body...

Excellent long exposures Unlimited MPEG movies with audio USB 2.0 connectivity Well positioned tripod mount Superb battery life...
Low $600.00 range...

For high quality and simplicity, you can't go wrong with a Canon G5 or a Sony f717.

Anyone have any experience with the DSC-V1? Look like a good compact alternative to the F717. Although, the flash looks like it placed in a horrible spot.

It costs nearly as much as the 717, doesn't have as long battery life, doesn't have as bright a lens, and doesn't shoot as sharply. No need for "compactness" in a clinic setting either.
