To all OC'ers: 8IGX (probably all 845G based MBs) and Kingmax DDR333 issue

Hi everybody,

few weeks ago I bought an Gigabyte GA-8IGX motherboard and 2x256MB Kingmax DDR333 powered by an P4 1.6A.

My main idea was to make an "small" overclock from 1.6A to 2.13GHz (raising the FSB from 100 to 133 or 400 to 533 Quadpumped). First what I found out was that there is no option on the FSB:RAM ratio of 4:5 (what should alow using DDR333 at 333MHz speeds when the FSB is at 133MHz). Anyway the open option was that I could use 266MHz or 354MHz on the memory. When using only one RAM stick the system was kind of stable at 266MHz (but I've had power up issues, where I had to hit reset after starting the computer), but 354 most often didn't wanna but at all. Although the memory is a good one regarding to reviews from the web. Finally I tested my memory with memtest86, available at http://www.memtest86.com . The process of testing takes up to 40 minutes. I found out that one of the modules wasn't good at 266, while the other one wasn't stable at 333 (when FSB was 125). So I decided to go to the store where I bought the memory and motherboard, explained them my problem and after a week of testing (I missed my computer so much...) the final conclusion was:

Kingmax DDR333 memory was OK on other chipset based motherboards, but it didn't wanna work with the 8IGX. So we made a deal that (after it was tested on the MB) we will change the 2 Kingmax (256MB, DDR333) modules with one Samsung 512MB PC2700 (DDR333) module and all problems where gone.

At the moment I'm running my system at following specs:
latest BIOS (F5) on 8IGX
P4 1.6A@2.14 (FSB 134, default voltage)
512MB DDR333@354 2.5-7-3-3 (default voltage - have to tweak the settings, but need more time for that as I put the system back together yesterday - now I'm at work)
Glacialtech Diamond 4000 cooler
AGP/PCI at 66/33 respectively

For now, all the power up issues are gone.

As reading through diverse forums on the web I have seen that people have had similar problems in combination of 845G and Kingmax memory modules (specially the 256MB, DDR333 ones). EPoX 4G4A+ for instance has similar problems.

Now I would like you to share your experinece with 845G chipset based motherboards and Kingmax (or other type of memory) so that we can help everybody out there.

Happy overclocking!
