for those of you who are into death metal, you gotta check out Zao's latest offering, entitled "The Funeral of God." For those of you familiar with this band, believe me when I say this CD is easily just as good as "Where Blood and Fire Bring Rest" and "Liberate Te Ex Inferis." I got mine a week and a half ago, and it still has not left my CD player. It's simply awesome.
For those of you who don't know Zao, be prepared to be blown away. They used to be metalcore, but have progressed more and more towards death metal. They still have a very distinctive sound, I think. Dan Weyandt is one of the greatest death vocalists there is. He may not have much range (but then who does when they're screaming?) but his voice is so frightening... Musically, they are very unique as well.
Two tracks specially have stood out from the rest. "The Last Song From Zion" has quickly become one of my favorite Zao songs, as has "In Times Gone Past." The former is actually quite catchy for a metal song, but not in a teeny-bopper pop way. It's the kind where you just have to headbang along to it. In the latter, turn your speakers up around 1:20, and just listen to the transition from Dan's murmur to his death scream. It will seriously make you cringe.
I wrote a more detailed review at epinions.com, it's the only review of this CD I think, so if you're interested, you can check that out. I was afraid this CD would be like their last two Cds, which were still pretty good but just not the Zao I knew and loved. They returned to their earlier sound for this album, and I think it deserves all the recognition it can get. I am just amazed by it.
