To all LCD gamers...

I have a Dell inspiron 2500 notebook, and the highest color depth I'm able to get is 24 bit color. Now I can run UT (the classic) fine in 16 bit color (although it's ugly), but if I alt-tab to the desktop, UT crashes complaining it can't find a suitable graphics mode.
I'm pretty sure that if I was able to set my desktop at 32 bit this problem would go away, but it doesn't seem to be possible.

Is the LCD limited, is it the graphics chip (Intel 815E), the OS, drivers, or what?

graphics chip definitely. I have some old SiS agp card in this temp. computer of mine and the max it can do is 24 bit as well. The i815 is about as old as this gfx card, so I'd say it is limited to 24 bit
