To all headphone people......

Does the faint crunching/beeping/scanning - like noise bug the hell out anyone? I'm not talking an unbearable screaming noise, but a faint but audible noise that is clearly just annoying. This can be only heard via headphones, but seems to make itself know on my desktop or laptop. Anyone manage to dampen this at all? Thanks in advance.

That's a 'feature' of onboard sound. You can hear your mouse! Neato!

LOL! I forgot to list the mouse as well!! An Audigy 2 ZS will be going in soon, but will it possibly produce white noise too? The overall quality of my current on-board audio is pretty damn good. Great treble and bass with a lot of volume headroom. It does sometimes pop and hiccup during a load intensive app (pretty much any beefy 3d game..Far Cry, BF: Vietnam, Halo, etc etc), but proves to be the best representation I ever heard for on-board stuff so far.

Nope, you won't experience any of those problems with an Audigy 2 ZS. The opamps are a little iffy on creative cards though, so keep the system volume around or under 80%. That should be PLENTY for headphones and speakers with their own amplification.

Funny for me cuz everytime I hit one of my keys on my keyboard it makes a sound, just like it does when the mouse is moving and whatnot. Good times... even though I'm using a Turtle Beach Santa Cruz sound card and not the onboard sound....

I use a Turtle Beach Santa Cruz with some Sennheiser HD212 pro headphones and I don't hear anything even when turned up really loud.

that's what sucks about having analog circuitry inside the computer case.

There is a lot of electro-magnetic energy banging around inside that computer case. It's a hostile enviroment for sensitive stuff like sound cards.

Onboard audio = very poor SNR.

That has got to be the worst suggestion I've ever seen... I mean, the guy has onboard audio, and he's going to move to this????

the noise you hear is caused by interference with your vga cable. which is why u can "hear" your mouse when u move, maximize/move windows, etc. i had the same problem with my audigy, don't really know of a way to fix this besides try moving ur soundcard to a diff pci slot farther from the vidcard.

I didn't suggest this person go out and buy this!

My point is onboard audio and the majority of PC soundboards in general have rather poor quality. This becomes apparent when the user switches to cans since 99% of the computers are not used in a Illbruck Sonex treated studio.

The Audigy 2 NS (USB 2.0) is noticeably quieter than its inboard PC counterpart. For $99 it's a very good compromise.

Cheers!

I've heard no reports to indicate that the Audigy 2 NX is noticably less noisy.... The Audigy line of cards doesn't really provide the sound quality requisite to noticing minute EM interference....

i have a laptop and experience the exact same noise problem.

the only thing one can really do is buy an external soundcard, if it's that important to u. the noise is inaudible w/ sound playback, so it doesn't bother me too much. look here at tom's hardware for a review of terratec's aureon 7.1 firewire external sound card.

It can be from anything. My worst culprit seems to be video card. This Leadtek has far less than any other modern card I have encountered [that I have been able to listen to with decent quality sound]. With inputs muted, it shouldn't happen at all, but still might (w/ another vid card, I could hear it using a TBSC, but almost as faint as w/ my current card, a Philips Aurilium). However, on an Audigy2 ZS, if you can hear it, it should be extremely faint. Enough that any hiss or hum from other sources would be at similar volume.
The oddest thing it that it does not seem to scale to volume (odd, but just like background hiss/hum), on all cards I tried, save a TB Montego.

Also note that while I don't have an insane sound system, I have very touchy hearing. Nobody but me seems to be able to hear it in my current setup--but nobody else I know hears the whine of a TV, either.

Don't say Audigy line as a general. The Audigy (original) was typical creative junk IMO.

The Audigy2 and higher produce some of the cleanest output in any consumer class pc audio device within its price range. The Audigy2 NX not only has cleaner output but achieves higher volume levels on its line output when driving particularly inefficient cans. It can also be connected directly to a high fidelity system with no preamp to control volume without fear of blowing anything, extremely low turn on/turn off noise and no hiss.

Not too many people connect their sound cards directly to a playback system featuring a Krell FPB-600C power amplifier! 24/96 and 24/192 sounds incredible (9/10) and given the price it should be a sin. I was doing all this from a notebook and the floor is full of divots from chins! :p

I would not dare connect onboard audio directly to such a system!

Getting back to the OP, if you connect one of these to your USB 2.0 ports and use headphones, you will NOT be disappointed.

Cheers!

what were you testing with? i have the santa cruz and its dead silent. i use a hd497. not pro audio, but good enough to hear if a sound card is pretty much dead silent to normal hearing. i only hear noise if i unmute line in. i think its your system, or u didn't mute the extra inputs. i use the versa jack for headphones.

I haven't tested the TBSC w/ the new video card, and probably won't. I imagine it would be silent.

hm, did you install the card right next to it? the advice i remember(very old) is to install the soundcard as far away from vid card as possible

AGP, 6 slots, sixth slot. I have a feeling most video cards are much better about such things. My Leadtek might be fine as well, but since it is summer, I've been unable to use the PC w/ the case closed, so it is not getting the benefit of that. Were it closed in, it might be 100% silent now.

Said video card started showing artifacts at stock speeds. I will play around with the replacement. I have a feeling the noise will be louder than my current one (I guess you get what you pay for), but the ungodly loud noise it made may have been a hint it was bad from the start. I'll find out in a couple weeks.

Don't you ever want to listen to 16/44.1khz though?

I do every time I play a CD or MP3. :)

Sounds fine for mainstream and broadcast of course.

Cheers!

Did you swap out the DAC on the Audigy 2 that resamples all 44.1khz sound to 48khz? What DAC did you swap it for?
