How much is rent near the UBC area?

I will be there this weekend so I want to visit some nearby rental areas what is a nice place I can get to using public transportation.

Well what are you looking for? Will you have a roommate? Apartment or basement suite?

Kitsilano is pretty popular with students as it's close to the beach. It can be kind of noisy there at night.

Along Dunbar is pretty good for finding houses/basement suites.

I'm in Kerrisdale (along 41st ave, very easy to get to by bus), and I love it here. Quiet yet central.

A decent 1br apartment is oh, $1000, 2br goes for $1300, basement suites vary of course but are generally a little cheaper. Of course you can probably find a better deal here and there but that's a general guideline.

If you need any help let me know. I'll be out of town this weekend, but I'd be happy to do what I can to help out.

edit: public transportation to UBC is really great. You won't have any problems finding places near bus routes. Buses go east from UBC along 4th ave, 10th (then broadway which is 9th), 16th, 25th, 41st, and 49th. They are all cross-connected by a lot of north-south running buses as well, so you can be pretty much anywhere and be walking distance to a bus.

well as of now I am just looking for approximate pricing as I am interviewing for a position there, some pricing will help me get a handle on approximate living expenses and I can decide on my asking pay.

Asfar as what I am looking for- 1BR, no roommate, no basement and with washer and dryer

With washer and dryer... off the top of my head that'll prolly be in the $1100-$1200 range, but you can double check on craigslist or the local classifieds.

Dorm isn't the nicest place to be, but it is close to school.

Dunbar/Kerrisdale/Kits are popular with UBC crowd, and Broadway/4th/Granville also are decent if you don't mind a bit of traveling.

I lived in Kerrisdale, 7th/Main, and Trout Lake area during my stint at UBC. To me Kerrisdale was nice and quiet, and Trout Lake was awesome because it was close to Commercial Dr.

Sorry, no current housing price because it was a few years ago that I lived there.

You live near Punjabi Market? Was a time when me and my family couldn't get enough of the All India Sweets Buffet restaurant. For months we went there once a week for dinner! Still love the place but eventually we got a little tired of it.

Anyone else you need to know about? Renting isn't something I know anything about here but silverpig has you covered there seems.

how far is the punjabi market area from ubc

Punjabi Market area is along Main St. It's around 41st to 49th St and Main. It's still a bit of a trek from UBC (probably another 30 mins or so by bus).

If you want something by UBC, it's going to be $$$. My dad manages a few properties out there for some of his friends out near UBC and they're easily $1400 for a top floor of a house. I'd expect an apartment rental to be somehwere around that too (for a nicer looking place). Last time I was in the UBC area, I saw some swanky apartments that had been built there. Very nice, and I'm guessing those were for sale, and not for rental.

There's tons of buses that go out to UBC. 41 (which runs along 41st Av), 49 (which runs along 49th Av), 25 (which runs along King Edward to Nanaimo St down to BCIT) and the 99/BLine (express bus) and #9 (both run down Broadway) all go to UBC. There's probably tons more, but those are the ones I'm familiar with. If you're commuting, it would be best to find something along the bus routes. All of these will probably get you from East Vancouver to UBC in about 30-45 minutes.

I browsed through Craigslist, and this is about as close as I could find to one of these routes that's on the West side (for a shorter commute)

Finding places on the West side of Vancouver are going to be pretty pricey as the west side is more "prestigious" the closer you get to UBC. Anything west of Main St (roughly) is considered the West Side of Vancouver. Looking a little further east will probably get you something cheaper (but adds a bit more time to the commute).

If you're here short term, I'd suggest something west of Cambie St. They're still working on the train line down Cambie St and traffic is going to be a bitch for at least another year until it's complete.

EDIT: Found another one on Craigslist: http://vancouver.en.craigslist.ca/apa/796589064.html

Thanks for the grewat replies guys. The interview went great and I am in love with vancouver. The city is just awesome. Loved Stanley Park and grouse mountain plus downtows is the cleanest I have ever seen. Spanish point and english bay were full of hotties and I am definite that if I end up in vancouver I am gonna be in Kitsilano area.....
