IL-2 Sturmovik: Forgotten battles is the best game available right now.
At least, in my opinion.
I play every day online for an hour or two and I never get bored . . . . instead I just love it more (and now the patch is coming out witch will fix some sound issues and FM problems).
It is NOT hard to learn. Takeoffs and landings are not a problem in full realism . . (as it should be, WWII pilots often said that to, landings were surprisingly easy). In fact, to take off, all you need to do is start your engine and put it at full throttle, and use the controls to keep the plane from nosing down or up or rolling left and right, and then at 140 km/h start to pull back until airborn, then retract gear and flaps.
In fact flaps and runways are optional (although off-road takeoffs can be BUMPY!!
although some planes are very difficult to get airborn (He-111, Me-262 (fireball! must use runway for these two).
The campaign system is bad. So there is no point in playing it . . . the only things I do are the Quick mission builder for some quick and dirty dogfights, and online for the real fun.
Online code is not bad, regardless of all the complaints, easy to connect, no laggier than other games.
For me, my kill-death ratio is about 1.5 and has been for some time, so Online play is very challenging and immensly satisfying when you down someone, but it doesn't get frustrating.
Much of your online skill depends on how well suited you are to your aircraft, for newbies, try the La-7 or La-5FN or Yak-3 etc. For pilots who love Luftwaffe planes, the 109 and 190 are your best bets, although they require some reading and studying of real tactics to truly fly well (stay high and avoid hard turns . . Boom and Zoom.)
My personal favorite is the Yak-9K. It is a beast to fly, stalls easily and stalls hard. It is a mediocre dogfighter at best. But it has a 45mm cannon. This beast is the biggest fighter mounted gun in the game. One good hit will destroy any plane, so I find it quite easy to down enemies.
Buy it, its great fun.
