I heard Ati does not have great graphics which I doubt, and I heard in tunnels for example on de_dust2, it is very dark, etc. I was about to get 5870 but will CS:S still be fine? I would assume so but people have told me to stick with Nvidia.

Thoughts? Thanks!

No idea what your talking about... anyway I have an ati card and have never had one problem with counter strike source. People who tell you to stick with nvidia for no real reason are partially retarded. You wont be disappointed with a 5870.

render quality on newer cards is great regardless.
there is no ati specific issue for cs. its quite old now so they've worked out most kinks..cept for the slightly dodgy hdr which makes certain things look wrong.

anyways ssaa with ati and cs source should look sweet

I've played CS:S with

X1600 Pro
X800GT
2900XT
4200 (onboard)
4850

All played without a glitch..

I just bought CSS and tested it out with my X800GT. The tunnels were not really dark at all, especially compared to 1.6 and CZ.

Rubbish. I've played css for years and have owned many ati cards. I've never had an issue including my current 5850.

I've had problems with ATI drivers and various cards before, having incorrect (too dark) Gamma settings for 3D apps, notably Unreal Tournament.

I have noticed a few caveats with ATI cards and CS:S having recently switched over from an 8800GTS. The biggest gripe is on de_westwood - on an ATI card, there is PERVASIVE mist/dust everywhere. It's so bad that I can't see anyone on the other side of the map from CT spawn. Switching to DX level 8.1 helps the issue a bit, but it's still present. I think everything is a little bit darker in general, but it's not too bad. I have also noticed that blindness/screen flashes in Warcraft:source are much more debilitating. This probably means regular flashbangs are more debilitating as well, but I haven't really noticed anything with FBs. If I had a single gripe it would be the de_westwood gimp, which is not such a bad tradeoff for better framerates.

^^ This

It's played well on all of my cards, nvidia and ati alike.
I have to force DX8 on my laptop with the mobile radeon 7, it's pixelated but it's not dark.

I noticed this as well. I went from an 8800GTS to a 5850 and suddenly there was dust in random places on some maps. There is likely some console command that removes it but it is strange that it only shows up on ATI cards

Well the source engine does include code from NVIDIA.... :whiste:

Any issues ATI may have had with source were probably driver issues and fixed a long, long time ago.

I'm sure the 5870 would play source fine and at any max setting.

On a side note, can't wait until Source 2.0

I thought I read that the issue was that ATI did not have 16-bit texture dithering in their latest cards, or something like that...

here, I found the topic: http://forums.steampowered.com/forums/showthread.php?t=563372&page=19

In any case, I'm pretty sure the Source engine is optimized for ATI. Remember when HL2 came out, ATI stomped all over NVIDIA, whereas NVIDIA rocked Doom3...
