I've insisted on using APM ever since I tried enabling ACPI about two years ago on several systems and I had NOTHING but problems; freezing, crashing, PnP problems, and other weird anomalies like audio problems, all of which magically disappeared after forcing APM instead of ACPI. I figured it was driver/BIOS related since many peripheral and motherboard manufacturers had drivers or BIOS that were terribly incompatible or buggy with ACPI. But, that was two years ago...

I'm putting together a system for my parents, new MSI motherboard (KM133a Pro5), 850 Duron, 128MB RAM, Creative Modem Blaster, on-board sound/video, pretty basic stuff. I will be using Win98SE and was wondering how far ACPI has come along insofar as BIOS and driver are concerned. Anyone actually use ACPI on Win98/SE and have a good experience?

The ACPI under Win98SE is very different to that of Win2K/WinXP.

Whether it is on or off does not make too much difference in Win98SE.

To force ACPI installation, use the command line setup /p j.

To force non-ACPI installation, use the command line setup /p i.
