A friend of mine is building his first system, and he can choose between these two cards (both AGP). Any opinions on which one is better? He'll be using it for occasionla gaming, some graphics (Photoshop, etc), and general stuff. He also wants good text. He asked me but I hadn't had any of these, so can't say for sure. Any opinions will be very appreciated! Thanks!

depends what OS he is using. 98 drivers for the v3 is really good. i heard some ppl say the 2000 and xp drivers are not too hot. if he is gonna use win98, than i say go for the v3. anything more recent than 98, use the tnt. i have read that tnt 2d kinda blows. if ur friend has not already bought a video card, maybe he should geta radeon. decent game performance, and good 2d (plus good dvd playback).

Voodoo has better 2d desktop video. TNT2 Ultra would be better for games and has better driver support (well, any driver support).

If your running any 9X based OS, or Windows 2000 I'd go with the V3 in a heartbeat... drivers are rock solid and totally reliable. It has better 2D then the TNT2 Ultra which'll be nice in PS, and reasonably close gaming performance and should be a very easy overclock to V3 3000 speeds. Plus you get GLide compatibility for older games, and a few modern games that still support GLide.

If your running WinXP I'd go with the TNT2 Ultra b/c 3dfx died before they ever released XP drivers so driver support under XP is still somewhat iffy from the third party drivers, while the TNT2 Ultra has very good support under XP. It's a faster card for gaming, but not a very good overclocker, and 2D is relatively poor.

Thank a lot for the replies, guys (or girls :))! I guess V3 is the unanimous opinion (he's using Win98).

nice choice. i have seen the v3 3k agp on the FS forums around $30 shipped. u could possibly get a radeon le from newegg's refurb page for like $40 (or around that area)... that way if your friend wants to upgrade OS... driver support should not be a problem.
