My current tmobile contract is up and I'm trying to decide what to do. I know my wife wants hers replaced but I'm not sure about my BB. I know I could get a curve pretty cheap, but I'm really interested in improvements along the line of 3g than just a newer phone.

What's the estimate of the new network going live and BBs released to take advatage of it?

Or should I just pick up one phone for her for a year extension and wait?

I talked to T-Mobile a week ago on another thing, and my call got routed pretty high up the technician tree and when we resolved my issue, we chatted about 3G and T-Mobile. As of right now, it's been released in New York and Las Angeles. It's priced the same as EDGE ($20/month for data on top of a voice plan). It's on a different band than everyone else in the rest of the world - 1.7/2.1GHz AWS - so there's not a lot of choices in terms of phones. By the end of Q3, T-Mobile is planning to roll it out to another 10 cities, and then by the end of Q4, to 30 cities, with all major metropolitan areas covered by the end of next year... not exactly a speedy roll-out.

I'm largely unimpressed with T-Mo's 3G plans. I like my monthly payment with them (we have a good deal), I love their support (calling them is actually a mostly pleasant experience), and I like my local service quality here in northern Colorado. But now that I have an iPhone (unlocked, on T-Mobile) and I use it all the time for web surfing, I'm considering moving to AT&T for their 3G service... AT&T has 3G here in my city now... with T-Mobile I'm looking at late next year best case.

I use them mainly because of the wife. just about all of her family has tmobile too, so I have a fairly cheap family plan for us + my data plan and we end up only using a couple hundred billable minutes, the rest are free.

Really would like to have faster data on the phone though as I do use it a good bit.

The BlackBerry Bold is 3G and should be available on T mo shortly.

Most future devices from RIM will be 3G now with the exception of one more GSM/EDGE device.

Most future RIM devices will be quad-band 3G? Just clarifying because when I hear the words "3G" most of the time people mean "tri-band 3G" (850/2100/2200), not quad-band 3G (850/1700/2100/2200). T-Mo needs quad-band.

I have no reason to expect any future '3G' device to have a lower bandwidth specification than the Bold, but you never know until it's in your hands.

*All of this is to the best of my knowledge and may be incorrect*

Thanks for the info, Divide.

I can dream of a Blackberry Thunder in my future running on 3G on T-Mobile.

Seems like things are leaning to just picking up her a phone then and start my 1 year timer. Could easily be 6 months before network and phone rollout for Tmobile from the limited info on it I could find.

The folks I talked to @ tmob a few months ago suggested an Android phone by Q4 or earlier through them, and they thought it would be one of those game changing devices.

I'd renew your wife's contract and just go month to month on yours for a while to see what they come up with.

I have a family plan with 4 lines of service (I actually have a phone just for dating  ), and 2 of the lines are out of contract, I hope to snatch up an Android based phone when it becomes available.

I'm gonna have to quit giving DBZ shit about BB's, I'm really liking the eTrade app on my Curve
