TLOU: Remastered or GTA V for PS4?

Hey guys,

I'm looking to spend some money this holiday and was wondering if I should buy TLOU or GTA V?

It's mostly for a friend that hasn't played either, so would love some opinions on them.

Cheers

TLoU is amazing 🙂 I'd say go for it (disclaimer: I have not played GTAV).

It has an amazing story and world that will stay with your friend for a while after finishing it.

Grand Theft Auto is probably the safer, universal bet. Anybody can pick up, goof around, and enjoy it.

The Last of Us, though, is a masterpiece of story-telling and character exposition that has rarely been matched in video games. If he can appreciate slower, more deliberate pacing and deep emotional plots, TLOU cannot be missed.

If not, GTAV is a safe bet.

I say get both. Most likely you would be paying full price for GTA then since it's not out yet. You should be seeing The Last of Us go on sale by the holidays I assume.

Well I'm being bored to f'ing tears by TLOU, so I'd say GTAV by default

and gta5 (as well as all gta games since san andreas) was boring the hell out of me after 5 minutes but TLOU is one of the best games i've ever played.

moral of the story - make your own decisions. strangers on the internet can't tell you what you will like better.

Definitely TLOU if he hasn't played it. GTAV is probably going to be the same game as always, with better graphics, while TLOU story is something that he hasn't experienced.

Pick the one that fits you better. TLoU was amazing, and GTA is universally a steaming turd to me. So there you go.

Lol @ all the varying opinions on this thread 😛

As for TLOU, he didn't want to watch any trailers or read too much on features so I guess he wanted to play it. However, I myself haven't played it either. Is there any kind of loot to the game? Absolutely love finding loot around and picking it up to use later on. Brings a lot of playability.

I think they're both overrated. TLOU is probably more so as it's linear with added standing around listening to characters talk so you feel more attached to them. GTA5 on the other hand pretends there's more to it as it annoys you with pointless driving listening to characters talk so feel more attached to them... guess it really depends on what kind of game play do you want as they attempt to make you feel more attached

If by loot you mean:

Guns
Ammo
Melee weapons (2x4, steel pipe, bottles, bricks)
Parts for weapon upgrades
Tools to enable weapon upgrades
Sugar, rags, binding, explosives, and blades to craft weapons and medkits
Supplements for physical attribute/skill upgrades
Firefly pendants

Then yes.

This really is a tough one and I think it comes down to online play. If you have friends to play with online get the last of us, if not then get GTA 5.

Playing the last of us without friends online would probably be a disaster. You need good communication and teamwork to stay alive and win. Without friends your taking a gamble on playing with randoms and that's not fun.

I really like TLOU campaign better but GTA 5 offers more brainless fun if that makes sense. You can pick it up and do whatever you want with or without friends and have a good time.
If its a gift for your friend get GTA 5 and a used copy of TLOU, both games are worth playing for sure and they will appreciate it

Last of us is a little like a character driven movie. You need to take it in carefully and pay attention to the details. Some people just aren't down for that.

I'd rather just watch a movie or a TV show. There's nothing wrong with adding character development, in fact it is really awesome. It's another thing to have to stand there and wait as someone tells you about how they don't like peas, or some other really pointless topic. When I play a game I like to do something and not just walk up the hall to another pointless conversation.

Dudebro, CoD and GTA are calling your body.

Did you play through TLoU in its entirety? If so, approximately how much time was wasted on pointless topics? My memory is fuzzy and I don't remember any.

You do know that the entirety of the conversations are optional right? There's even conversations you can miss because you didn't explore the entire area.

Your argument doesn't hold up. There is no "standing around listening to characters talk". The characters talk as you go through the areas and try to survive. It adds an element of realism and humanity to the game. The entire game you are doing something...unless you're not moving on purpose. Honestly I'd prefer the characters chat and talk about random things like Ellie asking Joel about what things were like before. The conversations also are far from pointless, if you bother to pay attention. It's much better than mindless shooting of stuff with no emotion to it. There's plenty of games I can play if I just wanna shoot at stuff.

But in all honesty, if you don't care about those conversations and the story in itself, then you won't like the game. As pure shooters there are games that are dedicated to mindless fragging. The beauty of TLOU is in its story and your involvement in it, not in the shooting part.

I just finished it the other week. It was a complete playthrough on the PS3 so it's not like I walked away and came back. There were a few parts where you'd get the prompt and if you didn't run back or were too far away you'd miss the whole thing. While a lot of it was interesting most of it was stuff I personally didn't care about one way or the other. It may have added some stuff to the girl but it didn't add or subtract from the story if you had skipped it. GTA was also filled with it but it didn't take itself seriously. More so that it's fans didn't take it too seriously. You never heard someone attempt to call someone a "dudebro" because they thought a lot of the dialogue wasn't the most awesome thing ever attempted. I'm beginning to think that TLOU fans are worse than Dave Matthews band fans.. "You didn't like it? Man, you must not get it.."

If you keep moving around the area and not go running back to the girl, she says something and the scene is missed. I also had issues if I walked away exploring that they'd start sounding muffled. That could very well be me and my sound mix but either way, if you didn't engage them you could be missing that oh so awesome story that makes the game. No one really talks about the game play, personally I think that's because it gets really repetitive quick.

Having said all that. While it's not the greatest game I've ever played, it wasn't the worst. More power to the people that think it's the most super awesome game ever created. I'm just not one of them.

Both. I have played TLOU on my PS3 at least 6 times through and GTAV on my 360 at least the same amount of time. Both are phenomenal games in each respected genre.

I disliked GTA V. But open world games don't appeal to me much in the first place, and I was feeling franchise fatigue (progressively like each GTA game less and less), so there's that.

I liked TLOU. It's not game of the century or even game of the year, but I thought it was enjoyable. Granted, there's a lot of stupid puzzle parts, but I thought the story was interesting enough. Production quality/acting/story was probably in the above average TV series range (which is actually good by video game standards). Thematically, its pretty similar to the movie 28 Days Later, so if you liked that movie, you'll probably like TLOU's story (or you'll hate it because you think it's a rip-off, who knows).
