Did anyone see that show on TLC at 900 that was about the airport in Japan that is built on the man made island? I missed the first part of the program, and i was wondering why they decided to build it offshore? I heard them say something about not enough land to build the airport.....is it really that crowded there? Still, i don't understand why they would spend so much extra money and time on something that could just collapse or sink in 30 secounds..........Seriously, imagine if they spent billions and billions of dollars on it, and the first day they fopund out it couldnt be used because it sunk too much, and it was about to get flooded. That would suck. Still, i think that was a great program, but why haven't i heard of this airport? They started building it when I was like 3, but my parents had never heard of it either. Anyway, TLC is a cool channel....they should do more stuff like this.

Uhh... did you not watch it? It wont sink in 30 seconds. There is no room in Tokyo to build anymore.

It was also for noise. Since airports are really close to the cities they close them down, I think most impose no landing or take-offs around 9pm. Osaka is also horribly expensive to take off and land at because it is in the middle of the ocean. They are also adding another runway I believe.

Ok, maybe i made an exaggeration, but if there was a large earthquake, and the lower layer of clay/dirt/sand was disturbed, it could sink too low and become unusable. Billions of dollars, and what, like 5 years of work gone to waste? To me, it seems amazing that they would take such a risk when nobody knew if it would even be able to work....but i guess they were right since it still functions and withstood the typhoon and earthquake.

Well, they didn't really expect it to sink. That was a big surprise to the engineers. I think future engineers will take some notes from this project and scrap the idea of building something so massive in the ocean. Its cool and all.... but the sinking part sucks. ;)

I've seen that program before (I've lost countless hours of sleep due to turning on TLC or the Discovery Channel before I go to bed and finding good shows to watch). I think they expected it to sink some, but not as much as it has. And the reason they didn't build it in Tokyo itself is because there is no room in Tokyo. Instead of building out now, they have to build up due to the extreme lack of space. My roommate this year has family that lives in Japan and said that the piece of property that is in the family has been in the family for several generations due to its value. Rather than finding a new house, he said, what they do is demolish the old house and build a new one since property is so expensive there.

I never said it submerged. Its sinking a bit every year (don't know if SWirth86 #'s are correct, but its something like that).

It's really scary watching that program and seeing the adjusters underneath the airport ! They have these hydraulic levelers that raise the height of the airport as it sinks. One bad side though:if I am not mistaken, the lifts were practically fully extended by the end of the first year. Now I think that they put sandbags around the island so that it doesnt wash away.Yikes.

Peace
