Okay, so I spent a weekend at a friends' house where they had TiVo, and now I'm suffering from TiVo withdrawal. No fewer than 10 times last night I wished I could jump back a couple second and replay a clip. The thing was one of the coolest little devices I'd seen in a long time, so now I'm trying to decide whether the financial investment is worth it. Here's the deal:

There are a couple things keeping me from making the plunge:

It seems like an awful lot of money to spend on something considering the ongoing subscription fee.
For those that have them, has it been worth it?

I don't have a land-line, so the TiVo 2.0 or the SonicBlue ReplayTV would probably be the better option for content-updates since they have ethernet adapters.

What's coming down the road? I know there's a lot of movement with HDTV, and content-providers opposing the consumers' abilities to skip commercials and digitally record content using PVRs, but does anybody know more about the future of this industry that can shed some light on whether it's better to wait and see or just go for it?

I'm a TimeWarner subscriber, and I've noticed that they're starting to offer a similar service on a very limited basis for select channels. It doesn't seem to be exactly what I want, but does anyone know if they're going to be offering this service on a more wide-spread basis in the future?

Lifetime-subscription fee: The lifetime subcription fee is per-unit ... so when some new technology comes out from TiVo and my old box is left in the dust, I'm going to have to pony up the cash to not only buy a new unit, but also a new "lifetime" subscription. Is the lifetime subscription transferrable? Can I sell the unit with the subscription?

Thanks,

I think so, but I am not 100% sure. We had a lifetime sub with our first tivo, and when we returned it to phillips for another one, the sub transfered to the new unit fine. It was the same model though, so I am unsure if it'd work with a different model tivo.

I wouldn't advise picking up a refirb phillips model. Mine worked fine for about 4 months, then the audio stopped working, and shortly after that the video output died as well. It's just taking up space in the entertainment center now, I don't plan on replacing it unless I can get a good deal on a sony model.
