I am interested in Tivo. What I would like is a recorder that has better playback quality than your standard VCR. I particularly am interested in the PAUSE and Frame advance. My VCR just doesn't cut it. When you pause the picture quality diminshes a bit, sometimes there are lines in the picture. DVD is just magic. It's a perfect picture because it's digital. Is Tivo like that since it's digital, too?

Thanks

Once you get a TiVo, you will NEVER want to go back to normal TV. Never ;) As soon as I've got some money, I want to get another unit for the other TV in the house. It's that cool.

Paused pictures are a bit better, depending on the quality you have the recording set for.

Whatever you do, BUY A PVR you will NEVER go back to a VCR (unless you have old recorded tapes or swap tapes with other people).

Tivo
ReplayTV
UltimateTV

A great forum to learn more about PVRs is AVSForum.com

I bought my ReplayTV because I like it's interface over TiVo, they were offering a $100 rebate (which took me 13 months to get, hehe), a nifty 30 second skip button, NO MONTHLY FEES (this is already figured into the price of the unit) and you can program it over the web at MyReplayTV.com.

Enter the TiVo zealots!

So with Tivo you really have to pay 10 bucks / month or whatever? Is that true forever? if so, that's pretty crappy

The Tivo fee is (unless it's changed recently) $10/month -or- $100/year (I do this) -or- $250 for as long as your own the player.

I consider it the single best investment when it comes to my tv watchin'.

The Replay TV is nice because there aren't any further service fees. One thing though, with the 2.5 software update, the TiVo's Skip-to-End button can be changed to a 30-second skip button. Advertisers aren't big on the 30-second skip thing so naturally it's not well documented.

edit: Oh, yeah, PREACH ON, Brother RossMAN! ;)

Do you own a ReplayTV? If so, which one?

I just tap the 30 second button 4 times usually zips right past all the commercials, usually works flawlessly.

Search the Hot Deals forum for Tivo and you should easily find several for well under $200 after rebate, maybe even $100.

I have a 30-hr TiVo that I'm going to convert into a 112-hour or so. Currently, to get through commercials I tap the forward button three times and then tap the 7-second rewind. (I'm pretty damn good at it ;) ). At any rate, I can now change the Skip-to-end button to a 30-second skip button.

As an actor, I miss nearly all of the primetime TV. TiVo (insert other PVR name) allows me to catch what I want and (most importantly) when I want.

When I watch a normal TV, my thumb instinctively reaches for the Rewind, Pause, FFwd, etc. buttons. That tells me that it's right and good.

Once I get an actual job you can bet I'll be picking up another, networking em, etc. etc.

Overall, it is better than the VCR. But, your quality is only as good as your cable signal.

How do you do a 7 second rewind? That sounds pretty damn cool.

Thanks.

Yes you do. But I paid $99 for my DirecTivo. If I have it for 2 years I am still at $340 or so.....and by then I will get something better, or so I think. :) Compare that to how much you have to put up front for a Replay. Regardless of who or what is better, they all are soooo much better than a vcr. I have one Tivo and 4 DirecTivos. The kids love them, I love it and best of all, the wife can even operate them!

Last night I was watching TV over at a friends house and he started zipping through the commercials. That caught my attention so I asked him what he had and he told me he had a TiVo. I laughed because I've seen you guys raving about them but I'd never seen one in use. He tossed me the remote and after I played with it for about 10 minutes I WAN'T ONE! I was totally impressed. He got his for free with his DirectTV!

I messed around with watching live TV and then pausing it for a couple seconds to see if I could tell the quality difference. I couldn't tell the difference.
