Tivo: Why get a subscription?

I got a Tivo Series 2 with a one-year prepaid subscription. I set up the hardware over the weekend and programmed it to record my shows, but I've not gone online to activate my subscription.

So what's the point of a subscription? Seems like it's quite functional without one . . .

edit: Just to clarify--I already have the Tivo PVR. I'm wondering what is the point of the additional subscription.

Isn't the point of the subscription so you can go online and program your Tivo?
Example 1: You are at the office and forgot to program your Tivo to record the Teletubbies marathon. You go to Tivo's website and connect via internet to your Tivo to set up its schedule.

Seems like a lot to pay for that functionality. ANy other benefits for a subscription?

because unless you have the model Rossman linked to, it will be a brick after your prepaid subscription is up. Well, not a brick totally, but only able to manually record by date and time (no guide data at all). And the model he mentioned is out of production.

The Series2 is a total brick. The Series1 allowed you to record as you mentioned but the Series2 doesn't function at all. You get a month of free service when you purchase a new TiVo which is what you're seeing.

I see! Thanks for the clarification 😱 My wife got it for me and I have no idea about Tivo services or terms.
