Tivo S2 users: Tivo series 1 user looking to switch

Been using my tivo for the past 4 yrs but we've recently moved and there's no landline. I've been having a hell of time getting the tivo to call out through the serial cable. Basically it works but I need to move the tivo to the computer room everytime to dial out.

Anyone know what's the best model for S2 in terms of hackability and also whether lifetime subscription is available? I checked the website and it looks like there is an option for that but I wanted to make sure.

Isn't there only one model Tivo series 2 available?

Yes lifetime subscription is available for $299

You can also get updates via Ethernet or WiFi.

Two Hot Deals on Tivo series 2:

TiVo 40hr $49.99 AR Target or $45.99 AR/PM? (4/10 - 4/16)

80hr TiVo $99.99 AR, 40hr Replay $49.99 AR (refurb)

Another option is to look for a Toshiba SD-H400 for around $195 but it has two disadvantages:
1) Only 3 day TV schedule available, not the usual 2 weeks.
2) No Season Pass option.

A few advantages of the Toshiba SD-H400 are:
Combo DVD Player and Tivo unit in one unit.
Ability to update via Ethernet or WiFi.
FREE TIVO BASIC - NO MONTHLY OR LIFETIME FEES

Here is the difference between Tivo Basic and Plus

Check your favorite Hot Deals site for deals on the Toshiba SD-H400 or any other DVR.

Cool, thanks guys. I guess I confused between the Humax version versus the regular. But it seems like both are at the same price now (tivo website).

So with the Humax S2 you can update through the ethernet or usb?

I have TiVo S2 for sale 🙂 Heck, since you don't have a landline I might even throw in a wireless USB adapter, which will allow you to schedule recordings remotely and transfer recorded shows to your PC 🙂

I don't own a Humax S2 I own the regular Tivo series 2 and YES you can update via Ethernet. It does require a USB to Ethernet adapter (around $20) or WiFi adapter. I believe you have to first dial in with regular phone line only for the initial call. After that, it can get all future updates via USB Ethernet or WiFi.
