TiVo: How does it work?

*ahem* How does TiVo work? All I know is that it cuts out godamn adverts and that's a good thing in my book.

Well, it allows you to fast forward through them if you are watching something that was previously recorded - it doesn't cut them out.

Yeah, how is it set up? I know there are retail "TiVo" boxes but I recently heard about setting one up using a pc. This true? If so what's involved?

Bozo: thanks. So it's basically an advanced TV recording mechanism? How much space would, say, 12hrs of TV take on a HDD?
