Iv'e been seriously thinking about getting a TIVO since my job requires me to miss alot of stuff on television I used to be able to watch(Laker games). Anyway I was hoping some of you would point me in the right direction. I'm trying to decide whether to purchase a standalone unit or a DirecTIVO(since I already have directv). I basically plan on recording stuff ONLY from the dish and not from any other sources. The thing though is, I plan on using it here in my bedroom(2nd reciever in the house, main one is in the living room) and was wondering how difficult it would be to sell my bedroom reciever(since it's only 1 month old). I also plan on upgrading the unit to a bigger hard drive(I need the largest capacity space a unit will allow) sometime in the future so hopefully someone can point me which unit is easiest to to that on.



Also I need to know if anyone knows how much it costs to add local channels to Directv service.

local channels is like $6/month...I would also suggest going with the direcTivo units, as they can be had at CC for like $50 or $100 (usually after a MIR)...not sure about selling it...is it legal?

If you own the receiver it's really easy to sell, when I sold my Dish stuff (for DirecTivo) it went like hotcakes. I'd go with the DirecTivo, it's a no brainer in your position. Dual tuners is definitely the way to go. I've had mine for two years and it's great!

Where did you sell your Directv reciever? And did you call Directv up and tell them you were planning on selling it? I ask because I had to fill out a crapload of stuff at BestBuy when I puchased mine.

I have an RCA DirecTV receiver which I'm not using anymore (got replaced by our DirecTIVO which we LOVE).

It records at least 2 hours a day of TV, so much easier than a VCR.

It was Dish and I lied and told them I was moving to a place they didn't allow satellite, they told me the stuff was mine to sell (I was well out of contract.) Put it up on a Chicago newsgroup and the e-mails started rolling in. For existing satellite customers they end up paying full price for additional receivers (so used stuff is very attractive.)
