Wish my Walmart had as good prices. I was able to score a 14 hour for $110. Its now a 114 hour model. Not as good a deal as my first tivo ($50), but good enough for me to buy.

<< Is there any way to hack these things now where you don't have to use the service :D >>

TiVo is a great service, certainly worth the lousy $10 a month.

you can hack ethernet onto the TiVo, then download the listings from tvguide, parse it and encrypt it, then update the TiVo with it. avsforums.com will probably tell you how to do it.

Managed to get one for $99, not sure if it was a bargain or not, but I'll give it a try.

It was previously sold as well, the ********, some cables were missing.

I asked if they pricematched, but only other stores, not other walmarts :(

welshman, contact Tivo regarding the missing cables and they may help you out. I have heard of people getting cables from them for little or no cost.

Thanks AU, will do that.

Still downloading all the stuff, so I can't even play with it yet :(

Now I've got to figure out how to connect everything so I get it through the amp, vcr, along with everything else, not to mention the growing number of remotes!

I did notice it's dual voltage, which will be excellent if I move home to the UK, especially seeing as there were some PAL mods on one of the tivo hack sites.

AVSForums.com won't help you get free TiVo service in any way, and if you ask there you'll get flamed. They're a great resource for TiVo upgrading and other questions, though.

There's a place www.digitalrecorder.tv that even sells tivo's hacked so that you can use it w/o a subscription... ie no nag screen pops up. Before i get any flames: No i'm not trying to steal service.. I don't care about the guide, i like the manual recording w/o the nag screen.. Anybody knows where i can find out how to do it?

That isn't getting free TiVo service, you are using a free service from tv guide.

I'm gonna check my local Walmarts tomorrow, hopefully they'll have some for cheap.

Modding the TV guide data is way more trouble than the $10 a month the service costs.

If anyone needs parts/cables/repairs on Tivo's I have just about anything you could need. I can be found at the AVS forums too.
I'm always in the market to buy used ones too.

I've never tried PMing my local Walmart against another located in a different city/state. How easy or difficult is it? Can you offer me any tips? Did you do it in the electronics department or buy it at regular price then PM it at the customer service counter?

I tried this today at one of the Cincinnati, OH area Wal Marts, went straight to the electronics section and grabbed the clerk, showing her the print out of the receipt. Promptly was told that Wal Mart will only price match other stores offers, they will not price match other Wal Marts. Then dragged myself to Microcenter, where I was told "we don't carry Tivo's"...... Sigh..... Anyone try to get a Best Buy or Circuit City to price match this?

Basic Question: Can I just use a Tivo like a VCR? Just record with a timer rather than having to get a subscription?

The Colerain store I went to did indeed have one Tivo, it was under the racks of CD's, I didn't take a close look at it, but the SKU number on the receipt matched the one on the box except for the last couple of digits. I'm guessing it is a newer model.. No price on it that I could see, and after they told me they would not price match other Wal Marts, I did not bother to take it to one of those wall mounted price scanners to see what it's price was.

I had to look pretty hard to find the one they had, I did not see any tags on the racks indicating they normally even carry it, this one was pretty well hidden.

Just called the store (11:00PM) and asked the manager if they would price match other WalMarts, and was again told no, only their competitors. Just wanted to make sure .. :(
