Would like to get something to record shows on cable TV like Tivo does. I heard there wasn't a monthly fee with some Tivo units. Whats the cheapest method?

 
There are some Tivo DVD/DVD recorders out there with Tivo basic, not sure if they still make em. I have the toshiba SD400 which was one of the first. I also have a reg. Tivo series 2. The full blown Tivo is much nicer.

You can also rent one from your cable company. Ours charges $5.95 for a DVR.

No monthly fee, just gotta buy the software and a video card. And can do whatever you want with the files.
