"According to PVRBlog, TiVo's new operating system update enables content protection flags on a per-show basis. On some programs, notably syndicated shows, a red flag appears to indicate that the copyright holder has requested that TiVo devices not save a program past a certain date and that the program may not be copied to a PC using TiVo to Go. TiVo users were told to expect this style of flag only on pay-per-view and video on demand programming, and as such are upset that TiVo has restricted the capabilities of the receivers they bought and subscribed to use. The TiVo Community boards have some screen shots and firsthand accounts."

Why would they not want you to save a broadcasted syndicated program indefinitely?

glad I decided to hold off on getting on this bandwagon.

Yeah, you missed out on the best years of Tivo. Congrats!

I don't have to pay monthly fees to use my AIW and it can do all of this... I just saw tivo in action for the first time a few months ago and I almost sprang for it. I'm glad now that I didn't

Your AIW can automatically record every single episode of a program?
Your AIW has wishlists that tell it to record programming based on keywords, directors, titles or actors?
Your AIW has dual tuners?
Your AIW can suggest programming that it thinks you will like based on your ratings of other programs?

I'm impressed!

Because then you wouldn't buy the DVD Box Set, silly.

You gotta love the backwards mentality of the recording industry!

Your TiVO allows saving a program past a certain date and copying to a PC on all TV shows you can record?

You have to pay extra to get it on your computer too

It would make sense. It's supposed to be a "better VCR", and VCRs let you save the tapes.

The recording industry is trying to get around that SCOTUS ruling that says "time shifting" is allowable.

You don't have to pay extra for TivoToGo...

But the point is that your AIW does not, in fact, do "everything" Tivo does. Now you may not care about those features, which is a great reason to save $5-$15/month on a different solution/.

I don't know about the AIW, but from personal experience I can say that SageTV + the PVR-500MCE can do all of the above (though suggestions take the form of auto recording when enabled rather than a page with other shows listed - not sure if a tivo has an "other stuff I'd like" dialog since I've never used one. In fact, you don't even have to rate shows for it to find stuff you like - it just goes based off of your watching habits).

While I can see the draw of tivo, what with not needing a PC on to do all this stuff, the freedom from the monthly bills and from it telling me what I can and can't do with my recordings keeps me on the PC solution.

True. Chalk it up to my lack of experience with TiVo as I've only seen it in action once. The only thing I can ever imagine asking a HTPC to do is "record every law and order or every star trek you see" and I can't imagine having any difficulty with that on the AIW. The idea of paying extra only to face potential surprise DRM enforcement hurts my head :(

Which is exactly why Tivo owners are (or should be) pissed about this. They're paying for a service. But instead of Tivo defending its customers, it just bends right over.

As a DirecTivo user, this means little to me, except for time limits on broadcast programming, which is utter bullsh!t but not a showstopper.
