you have to subscribe to a monthly service fee or pay a lifetime service fee.

this is a Series2 model...some people on AT have been saying a Series3 is coming out soon so perhaps thats why there's the $150 MIR.

$219 - $150 MIR = $69

This deal is also available on the TiVo site if you don't have BB. Link

The $150 rebate has been available since at least September, so I don't know if it has to do with the Series 3 release.

Isn't the monthly fee the real deal killer here?

I use an AIW card in a PC that gets schedules free from gemstar, and pay $9.95 a month for a cable DVR (160 GB HD), but the DVR has zero up front costs or long term obligation.

Lifetime fee = $350
Putting together a HTPC (if you don't have one) is much higher than $350+$69

The TiVo is also easier if you are not the only one using the device. My parents, wife, in-laws, etc would have no use for a HTPC.
