Title IX...your thoughts?

Title IX appears to be rearing its ugly head back in the news these days. What's your take on this program that is supposed to "level the playing field?"

more harm than good if you ask me. It was good when it was put into place. now days i don't think it has a place and should be scrapped.

What is Title IX?

requires public education institutions to provide equal opportunities for women/men, most notibly in sports

ie

if a school has a men's sports team in fall , like football, they have to equally fund a women's sport team during the same time

or something like that, somebody smart can correct away

My cousin was one of the plaintiffs for this at Brown. They sued when Brown discontinued the womens volleyball team and the supreme court sided with them.

If the boys have a team funded by the university, then the women have a right to also.

but aren't the teams funded by ticket sales, memorabilia, refreshments, TV deals etc?

Title IX is good in theory, horrible in practice.

Should institutions fund women's sports? Of course.

Should they do so even for sports that don't generate money and that no one cares about? Yeah, probably.

Should they steal money from sports that do generate money and that people do care about? Sure.

Should they steal money from sports that do generate money and that people do care about and give it to women's sports teams that don't generate money and that no one cares about to the point that men's sports teams that don't generate money and that no one cares about can't survive?

Well, sorta goes against the point of "equallity", doesn't it?

The funny thing is, let's see the women's lacross team at Univ. Nebraska survive without the football team. Those teams should get equal funding. But the money they take from football should be spread EQUALLY to both men's and women's sports.

Some of the mens sports in division I generate millions in revenues for the school, easily enough to pay for the program, but you have other sports that don't generate the same revenues, like soccer, maybe baseball, volleyball, etc. Title IX says that if you provide funding for one program (coaching costs, transportation, equipment, etc.) for the men then you must be willing to provide an equal opportunity to the women.

Truthfully I don't know many specifics tho, and have only talked with her briefly about it.

I hate it. Its way to strict. I would be playing NCAA volleyball right now if it wasnt for title IX. As it is, my school only offers a club team. They used to fully fund a mens team, but had to get rid of it because of title IX.

Title IX in its first inception was a good idea, but women's sports are here to stay. There are simply MORE mens sports, so its not available to all athletes. Then theres the whole idea that the larger men's teams get more money. If the football team gets 25% of a schools sports money, then all other male sports are fighting for another 25% of money, while all female sports are sharing 50%. It totally destroys smaller men's teams.

I agree. At the college i went to they had 4 spots for the men's golf team. for the women's team they had as many as they could fill, and would offer scholarships to all of them.
