Must stay ignorant, can't let the facts change closed minds or save lives. So cancel that conference if the speakers insist on the truth. Why am I not surprised?

Vatican stem cell conference cancelled partly over keynote speaker George Daley from Boston

03/27/2012 3:35 PM
By Carolyn Y. Johnson, Globe Staff

An international stem cell conference scheduled to take place next month at the Vatican has been cancelled, and the Catholic News Agency has reported that the choice of speakers, which included a prominent Boston embryonic stem cell researcher, was a factor.

Dr. George Q. Daley, a stem cell researcher at Children’s Hospital Boston, was scheduled to give the opening lecture at the Third International Congress on Responsible Stem Cell Research. Daley said in an interview that he received a brief e-mail late last week announcing that the conference had been cancelled and that an explanation would follow shortly.

Unnamed sources told the Catholic News Agency that the event, as planned, would have presented an unacceptably ambivalent stance on embryonic stem cell research. The Catholic Church opposes human embyronic stem cell research because it requires the destruction of embryos.

One unnamed member of the Pontifical Academy for Life told the news agency: “The news of the cancellation of the Congress is an enormous relief to many members of the Pontifical Academy for Life, who felt that the presence on its program of so many speakers, including the keynote speaker, committed to embryonic stem cell research, was a betrayal of the mission of the Academy and a public scandal.”

The official reason for the cancellation of the conference is given on the website:

“Due to serious economic and logistic-organizational reasons that have completely jeopardized the success of the 3rd International Congress on Responsible Stem Cell Research, the Organizers have decided to cancel the event,” the website states.

In the preliminary program, the four-day meeting’s purpose is described as a focus on “the clinical use of stem cells, with emphasis on the ethical aspects of their applications.”

Daley said that the cancellation of the meeting is “very disappointing.” He said he had not been prohibited from speaking about embryonic stem cell research, but had been asked not to focus on that research in his talk. He said he had been planning to talk about embryonic stem cells in the context of the history of stem cell research and had been looking forward to the meeting.

“I think there are a lot of issues on which even opponents of embyronic stem cell research can agree upon, which is important -- probably most critically in the importance of establishing stem cell medicines on a very rigorous basis of rigorous clinical trials,” Daley said. “We’re all trying to fight aginst this premature marketing of unproven interventions to patients.”

If you do not stand for something, you will fall for anything. There is this little thing called "morals" and "values" that some people hold true.

Its not a matter of staying ignorant, its a matter of breaking those morals and values.

How many lives could we save if we killed prisoners and harvested their organs? Surely 10 year old Timmy could use that liver a lot more then a serial killer.

So where does an embryo place in society? Their just unwanted testing material, right? A homeless person is also unwanted, so we should kill that homeless person and test his body?

The problem wasn't the benefits of stem cell research. The fact that they even scheduled the conference in the first place should tell you that much.

So whats ignorant about it preCRT?

Catholic church has always believed that God wanted people to multiply, which is why we have millions of eggs and sperm. To eliminate that (and killing an embryo) you are going against God's will. So, naturally, being a religion of faith, they are not going to endorse it.

The embryo is going to be aborted regardless, so why not use it to save lives?

I expect all of those who oppose the use of embryonic stem cells to refuse any and all medical advances as a result of that research, now and forever into the future.

Those prisoners sentenced to death or life in prison are letting good organs go to waste. Lets just kill them early and harvest the organs so we save the life of someone that might become a productive member of society.

Where do we draw the line? Who in society deserves more respect then someone else?

An embryo is a human life form. If left alone it might have become a member of our society.

But for some reason embryos deserve less respect then those who made it past birth?

Just because an embryo is killed, we should treat it with less respect then say a homeless person or a serial killer?

Would you be happier if the woman donated the embryo for scientific research?

It is no different than a family donating organs or entire bodies of their loved ones for donation/research.

This gap between the pro and anti-choice will never be abridged.

So to stay true to their personal beliefs, every single person who opposes a woman's right to choose should swear off EVER benefiting from the fruits of that research, no matter what ills befall them or their loved ones in the future. Like the old anti-commies, 'better dead than Red'.

I would have no issue with forcing those that are executed to donate their organs. The laws would have to be enacted at both the federal and state levels though. I also think, and I could be wrong about this, that the current drug cocktail used for executions ruins the organs so that they can't be used.
Until that changes and we go to a less "humane" way of execution, don't expect it to be put in to tuse.

TIL Suzanne Somers grew her breast back using stem cells after it was removed due to breast cancer

Misleading title is misleading.

Thought I clarified it based on this:
"One unnamed member of the Pontifical Academy for Life told the news agency: “The news of the cancellation of the Congress is an enormous relief to many members of the Pontifical Academy for Life, who felt that the presence on its program of so many speakers, including the keynote speaker, committed to embryonic stem cell research, was a betrayal of the mission of the Academy and a public scandal.”"

The Vatican holding a conference on stem cells is about as relevant as the Vatican holding a conference on contraception, marriage, children, etc.

Let's focus on the problem. The Vatican is not against stem cell research entirely, it is against embryonic stem cell research. There, is that better?

I was glad to see them cancel the scientific conference rather then let it be hijacked by political assholes.

Embryonic stem cell research is the center focus of stem cell research. Pretending otherwise is lame, like cutting off your nose to spite your face.

But that is the gist of everything the Vatican does, isn't it? Like saying all life is precious except when that life is an 11 yo boy left alone with a pedophile priest. Then it's all engines ahead to protect the molester & screw the innocent kid.

This thread is lame. All you do is throw insults. Just the usual Catholic bashing.

My issue here is with your ridiculous notion that Catholicism is somehow anti-science. Centuries of Catholics in science speak otherwise. Just because a particular view does not line up with yours does not mean that the other view is anti-science. You just make yourself sound like an idiot for claiming so.

Not sure what you mean here, or where you even got this from. A researcher was going to give a keynote address which included a discussion of embryonic research. The Vatican is opposed to embryonic research, and that is why they canceled it. Who are the "political assholes" in this story?
