Tires/wheels upgrade question

How much harsher of a ride will I get going from 215-60-16 to 235-50-18?

The car is a 2008 Camry XLE.

Thanks

If you're going to 18" wheels the diameter of your tires will more closely match if you get the 45 series 18 inch tires.

http://www.miata.net/garage/tirecalc.html

with 235-45-18 your diameter becomes 26.3
with 235-50-18 your diameter becomes 27.3

It will be a slightly stiffer ride, but it's not going to rattle your fillings out.

Edit: the original diameter is 26.2"

Yeah, I had considered the 45 too but was hoping that the 50 would give me a little bit more sidewall. I had original thought about going with 17 inch rims but the cost for 18" isn't that much more. What would you guys recommend for the best ride quality?

I went through a wheel/tire upgrade, then later a suspension upgrade. I went from a 235-55-16 to a 265-35-18 front and 275-35-18 rear setup. Just changing the wheels and tires gave a good upgrade to the responsiveness of the steering and overall grip in corners. The ride was slightly stiffer, but it really wasn't a major change.

However, when I upgraded the suspension, especially the sway bars, it started to ride like a go-kart. I don't recommend getting sway bars to anyone unless you like to get beat to death at all times while driving. I'm thinking of going back to the stock sway bars soon. Springs didn't have that much effect on ride quality though, just a slightly shorter travel to bottoming out.

In summary, just get the 18's you know that's what you really want. Don't have regrets.

If you don't want to change the ride too much go with the 17" rims. The steering will be more responsive but you'll hardly notice the stiffer ride.

It's a Camry. Why the hell do you want 18" wheels on it? Especially if you're concerned about ride quality?

Here's what you gain from 18" wheels:
- Harsher ride
- Much greater chances of damaging your wheels from curbs, etc
- Poorer braking (assuming you keep the stock brakes)
- Faster-wearing tires (at a 45-series aspect ratio to keep the right diameter, you'll be limited to more performance-oriented tires)
- More expensive tires
- People will question your sanity for putting 18" wheels on a 4-cylinder granny car

Just keep the stock tires.

They look nice. How do you like the Goodyears? After winter is over I intend on getting a nice summer wheel/tire package for my '08 Altima Coupe but there's so many tires to pick from it seems.

sticking to the same tire type no...if you were going from a grand touring to a ultra performance tire than much more.

as long as you are within 3% usually it comes down to look or tire price.

Often when a 45 and 50 are offered in the same size one will be a lot less due to being more common.

The 235/40 was much cheaper than the 235/45 in my Goodyear F1 GS-D3's when I bought them. The original size I had was 205/55R16. When I bought the 235/45's they were on a special and close enough as well...they were AVS ES100's

Looks good but personally I would have gone with 18's. The camry is a fairly large car and the larger wheels would look much better. I have 18's on my gs but they still look small cause the car is so big.
