My friend got a G35 recently and today I woke up to see his facebook status say "My tires got stolen WTF." He's not a tires guy or anything by far but this is a used car (06) so perhaps someone put some nice wheels on, but I didn't notice any crazy rims or anything. Or are the tires themselves worth stealing?

Someone enlighten me.

Edit: Yeah stock rims. He got 3/4 wheels stolen around 2:30am. His sister came home around that time and the guys just bolted. I SUPPOSE stock rims + performance tires can add up....

Tires or Wheels?

i am guessing the wheels were taken? To just take the tires would be kinda weird.

Tires are expensive purchases.

Thieves steal things that are expensive.

Since tires = expensive, thieves steal these.

At least thats how I think it works.

I think wheels was the proper term, but yeah, his tires were stolen along with the rims. If someone stole JUST the tires, that is a thief with one hell of a sense of humor.

Unless the thieves had a mobile tire mounting machine I seriously doubt you can remove the tires off the wheels by hand.

Also thieve will steal anything. Heard too many stories of people getting their window smashed and all they took was the spare change in the ashtray.

I seem to recall a legendary Aimster thread...

very common

Usually it's aftermarket wheels that are stolen but swapping OEM wheels between different makes is also popular. Also, OEM wheels from the dealer can be outrageously expensive.

I can just see someone coming out to their car jacked up with the wheels still on it, but no tires.

I swear I thought his rims were stock rims.... hmmm

I knew he probably meant the whole wheel itself because it sounds retarded to me to steal tires. The guy works from home on Fridays so I expect him to wake up in an hour or so and I'll give him a ring to see what's up.

G35s run relatively low profile tires that are a bitch to get off WITH a tire machine. No way he got just the tires stolen.

I haven't heard of Infiniti wheels being stolen all that often but a lot of times Acuras will get their wheels 'removed' and put on some morons Honda who thinks putting Acura wheels on their car will fool anybody...

And +1 on the change thing. Back when I had my Ranger, somebody broke into it when it was parked right in my driveway. Took my meter quarters out of the ashtray and that's it...

My OEM wheels were stolen off of my Cavalier in October 2006. It was jacked up on cinder blocks...looked like it was out of a movie.

I'll see if I can dig up a picture.

Yes, this is fairly common. Tires & wheels are relatively easy to steal, easy to resell or use on another car, and almost untraceable.
(how many people actually document the serial number on their tires?)

(yes...I know, the tire serial number is actually a batch code, but even that will make ID'ing a stolen tire easier.)

Someone stole the wheels off of your Cavalier?

I own a Cavalier myself and didn't think anyone wanted ANYTHING to do with the damn car. :p

Isn't that fucking ridiculous? I mean, they were the "nice" OEM wheels that look like this (no that is not my car), but I still don't understand why out of the entire lot of cars my car was parked in, that they chose my car. It was highly visible and there were lots of nicer rims throughout the lot.

Never will I understand. To this day, everytime I see a Z24 Cavalier with my rims, I look for this little scuff mark that I accidentally put on them once when I first bought the car. Haven't found them yet :) Haha.

i would take pics and post them on the net if that ever happened to me, id be cracking up forever on it. i got my rear drive shaft stolen one time on my 4X4 truck, took me a few to realize that one.

and stealing wheels is harder to do with all the locks, alarms and such that are available, so im guessing it isnt as prevalent as it once was.

Probably because your car's rims fit the thief's car :)

Growing up around Detriot, it was fairly common to see a cars sitting on the street on blocks after someone had stolen the tires. That and car-b-que's.

Yes, tire locks. Though not foolproof, it would at least stop your average dumb criminal. That sucks.

Oh and the towing company messed up and kinda dropped my friend's car so that it hit the curb. messed up the bumper. LOL. Really sucks. I suppose it's pretty hard to tow a car like this even after putting on the spare tire.
