Tires (Michelin, Continental and General AltiMAX are some potions)

I need new tires on my car, 2010 Nissan Maxima S.

245/45R18 96V

I thought about changing out tires as I was told I could do that since I need all four replaced, but the load index (96) was the minimum on they would put on my car. I bought the car new and it has 52,000 miles on it now. The tires that came with it are Goodyear Eagle RS-A - P245/45R18 96V. These tires do not come with a warranty when bought brand new.

I have called around and I was suggested to call a tire place by a friend. I have called about eight different places locally. The tire place gave me prices on the three tires listed in the Title.

These are the Michelin I am looking at.
They run about $1,050 for the set of 4 installed. These come with a 55k mile warranty.

The Continental were $950 installed. These come with a 50k mile warranty.

The GA (RT 43 I believe) were $850 installed. These come with a 50k mile warranty.

I have read up on the Continental and GA some. They do not seem that bad from reviews. I do not mind spending the extra money for the Michelin, but I would like to see if someone else has input for these tires, or another suggestion.

Edit:

I have been looking online for pricing. Tire Rack will ship directly to a store for installation. Plus, the Michelins I am looking at are on sale, so I may get them from there.

Which Continentals are they? Usually Michelin is at the top of most tire review charts, but Continental makes some good tires as well.

If price was no object, I'd go for the Michelins.

Club warehouses like Sam's Club and Costco usually have the best prices on tires. For example, you listed about $1050 for the MXM4s, but Costco has the Primacy MXM4s in your size (245/45R18 96 V) for around $900 installed after a $70 instant rebate (which happens every month and alternates between Michelin and Bridgestone). A membership to Costco only costs $50 a year, so it might be worth it to get a Costco membership for this.

If you are looking for a sportier tire than the MXM4, you can also get the very highly regarded Pilot Sport A/S 3 in the same size for about $800 installed from Costco. They come with a 45k treadwear warranty.

Here's the link to Costco's tire selection for your Maxima. Keep in mind that Costco's monthly $70 discount is currently on Bridgestone, so next month the Michelins will be $70 cheaper (essentially canceling out the installation fee of $15 per tire).

Thanks for the replies.

I will look at Cooper tires.

I do not know what Continentals they were. I actually checked out Costco (got a membership last week). The tires were $900 + $60 install and + tax. While looking around Tire Rack put some up for $728 + $66 shipping and no tax for the set to a Firestone that will install them for about $75 total. That would save me around $180. I may check that out.

I did ask the guy at Costco about the discount and he informed me that they run Bridgestone one month then Michelin the next and Sam's will alternate with their off-brand and Michelins on the opposite month of Costco.

One nice thing which Costco does is that they include everything into their install fee. Roadside hazard, flat repair, nitrogen inflation for life, rotation and balance for life, etc are all included in their $60 installation fee. I usually call and schedule an appointment on a day when I need to get groceries, and that way I can get my tires rotated and balanced while I'm shopping there.

If you have a Costco membership and can wait until next month when they run their Michelin discount, the MXM4s will run you just under $900 installed (+ tax). That seems pretty competitive with Firestone, which seems to be approximately 800 shipped + 75 for installation. Did you check if Firestone gives you all the extras that Costco does?

By the way, I've had my tires rotated at Costco 3 times so far, and I've been impressed at the quality of their work. Most mechanics will simply tighten your lug nuts with air tools, but at Costco they actually use torque wrenches and ask you to come back after 25 miles to have the lug nut torque checked. I checked the lug nut torque myself with my own torque wrench, and they did in fact tighten it to specs (instead of over-tightening them with air tools like most places would have done).

Road hazard would come from Tire Rack and they reimburse you for up to $25 per tire. I am looking over FS and lifetime rotation and balance is $10 per tire. They also have a run flat tire service for about $5.

When I was looking at tires today, the Costco person did not even tell me they did all of that for their customer. I think you have sold me on the tires from Costco better than the employee did.

I need the tires before next weekend as I am going out of town and will be putting about 500 miles on my car round trip. I would like to wait but two are not looking great.

I'm surprised the guy didn't tell you. At all of the Costco locations I've been to, there is a giant sign in the tire center which lists all the things that are included in the $60 installation fee.

I think you just missed the monthly Michelin discount. It'll come back again in early May. I'm not sure how worn your tires are currently, so I don't know if it's possible to wait or not.

Here's the stuff that they include with installation:
Purchasing your tires from Costco Wholesale, whether it be online or from one of our local warehouse locations, provides you with several key advantages. Our published retail pricing includes all of the shipping and handling costs associated with your tires.

The Installation Package also includes Lifetime Maintenance Services that extend throughout the life of the tires you purchase. (some limits may apply). These Lifetime services include inflation pressure checks, tire balancing, tire rotations, as well as flat repairs.

Upon the service of your tires we also install new rubber valve stems (Note TPMS valve stems and accessories will be an additional charge). Additionally, we inflate your tires with nitrogen, not compressed air. Nitrogen retains tire pressure better over time than compressed air, which can positively impact the life of your tires, as well as the fuel economy of your vehicle.

Finally, for your protection, all of our tires are backed with the Costco Wholesale Road Hazard Warranty.

Take full advantage of The Costco Advantage today.

Their 30 day pricematch guarantee doesn't cover that?

It may. I've never tried to price-match tires at Costco before, but I do know that they tend to be pretty generous as far as customer service is concerned.

Oh, and one more thing. I don't think Costco's road hazard warranty has a $25 cap like Tire Rack's does. I believe they simply reimburse you an amount equal to the % tread left on the damaged tire x the retail price of the tire.

Thanks. I will call later today and find out or I may just wait on the tires for next month to purchase. I will check mine again when it is daylight out.

I have had the General Altimax HP on the wife's sedan for the last 40k miles or so. I have been exceptionally pleased with their performance over the Michelin's that came with the car when new.

I bought them for the wear, but mainly for the performance in rain and they have been awesome. I think I can get another 15k miles out of them.
