TireRack & Yokohama recommendations

Scarpozzi

It's time for me to put new tires on my car. It's got 61k miles on it and the rear tires are extremely low on tread....my fronts probably have 3 months of wear before they start to get slick. I have a slow leak in one of my rears that I noticed today. I'm going to try to nurse it for the week and put new tires on the car Friday.

I've never used TireRack.com, but am willing to give them a try. I prefer touring tires over regular all seasons because of their high milage and quiet ride. I'm looking at Yokohama Avid TRZs because they're rated really well on TireRack. Locally, a shop is charging $105 each for this tire that's $67 at Tirerack.

Are Yokohamas worth the money or is it "import" hype? A similarly priced tire from the website is the GoodYear Regatta 2. It's rated slightly lower, but I bought a set of these a few years ago and they were absolutely outstanding. They handled great, were quiet, and made my mitsubishi galant feel more expensive. Just wondering if anyone could give me feedback or experiences with both the tire and online buying of tires. Thanks,

-Scar

i had yokohama avid avs db or something, they were great tires.

My ABS used to go off all the time with the stock michelin energy, but after i switched the ABS never went off again.

Thanks. I was tempted to buy american, but decided to take a chance with these for once. 😉

i had good results on them, they grip dry or wet, i have even gone through light snow. Plus they were cheap.

Yoko is usually pretty good. I've had 2 sets for the Mazda(MPV Van) but its pretty good.

Also a few ofthe Mustang Cobra Terminatior(2003+) that came in the shop when I worked at a dealership came running the Yoko AVS. Appearantly it's not a bad, very inexpensive Max performance tire.

tirerack has test results for certain tires if you don't already know.

Definitely a good read.

Be sure to read the test results, not the user reviews though. The user reviews are totally worthless, but the comparison tests are great.

yeah i don't know why tirerack buries the useful test results but puts the worthless user reviews upfront.

Probably because everyone loves the tires they buy (human nature), so it helps sell more tires.

I've been happy with my Yokohama Avid H4s for the last 5 years. I plan to get more H4s when the time comes. Seem to be low price and good performance so why switch? I never really liked the Daytonas I had previously.

From my experience with TireRack you can expect to pay $61 shipping and it will be drop-shipped from some nearby city.

I ended up ordering them last night. I read the reviews, but the raw numbers that described the traction in all conditions were from users that completed a survey. So they're pretty much worthless too.

The important ratings are the rubber quality and traction/stopping power tests that the gubment does. They were just slightly better than the Goodyear counterparts I was considering...so I'll give them a try and if I don't like them, I'll avoid them in the future. Aside from the Firestone blunder a few years back, you don't hear a lot of negative things about tires unless someone has a suspension or alignment problem in their car that causes their tires to wear poorly.....and of course they blame the tire manufacturers.

I have Yokos on all my cars, Saturn, Subaru and Corvette and I will never buy another tire.
FYI, I just got the Avid TRZs put on my wife's Saturn this past year (from TireRack) and love them as an all season touring tire. Believe me, for the price you just can't go wrong. If you order from TireRack will get the tires delivered either to your house or your installer in two days.

+1

I have Yoko AS100's on my camaro in sig and IMHO, they are garbage. I've gotten better traction from a set of generic Wal-Mart times.

I bought those avid TRZ (I think, might be a slightly different model) and I am well pleased with them. Several thousand miles later they still look brand new. Comfort and noise are good, traction is good, I've only broke the tail loose when I was trying to in the rain.

I was deciding between the Pirelli P4's or the Yokohama TRZ's for my Altima but based on the comments here, I'll go with the Yokohamas. Thanks. 🙂

what are the useful test results?

fwiw my dad has a set of yokohama's on his '03 maxima SE, he really likes thme.

tirerack throws the actual tire onto a bmw 3 series or whatever, runs a group of competing tire models against each other, and measures things like grip in Gs, braking distance, time around a course, etc.

If tirerack has test data for the tire in question, it's usually a tab in the corner.
