Tired of HDs Failing on Me - What to Do ??

My HD just failed after about 6months of use (WD 500g), and this is probably the 5th or 6th hard drive failure within the past couple years. I swear they just don't make HD's like they used to.

I've lost so much important data that has cost me hours and lots of money to try and recover.

I've heard raid gives you security where you can just take out the faulty HD and replace it while still keeping your data and OS intact.

I did just buy an external HD for backup, but I would like something practical like RAID too where I can just replace the faulty HD without any loss of time.

Is this the best option or is there something new and better out there??

You should slow down for a sec and wonder WHY five or six harddrives died on you in the course of a couple of years! Really, that's very bad luck, or it's something else. Like, maybe they are running to hot? Maybe you move your case around without enough care, maybe you have a bad PSU or a 'dirty' energy grid in your house. HDD's don't like running much warmer then 50c, and if that's not the case, a UPS might come in handy as well, as well as a quality PSU, if you don't have one allready.

Welcome to anandtech forums btw :)

I guess it could be something else. I doubt they are getting too hot. I have a HUGE Lian Li case that cost me a few hundred and has HD fans.

My Powersupply is a few years old, its a 500watt OCZ. How long do these usually last? And wouldn't I have other hardware failures if it was something else. Everything in my computer other than the HD's have lasted.

BTW, What brand HDs are you using that fail so often?
