... and with every new maxtor drive you buy, you get a cd with detonator 4 drivers! :)

<< Could IBM lose the speed crown with this? I gotta see some reviewin' action >>

In transfer rate yes....but the problem is IBM usually beats Maxtor in seek time...and you could put a terrabyte/platter and it wouldn't help seek times.

yeah but remember increasing areal density also decreases seek time since the bits are packed closer together. Plus prices should drop fairly quickly once it's not "the newest drive around" since it only needs 2 platters to get 80 GB. Which also begs the question why not make a 3 platter 120 GB 7200 drive?

Wait a second, I just rechecked the info it says that the D740X comes in 20, 40, 60, and 80 GB configurations.... meaning the fast drive is a 20 Gig/platter drive, just like the 60GXP series.... Damn, I thought 40 Gig/platters at 7200 RPMs would be smoking... Oh well, still would be interesting to see how they compare to the IBMs.

*Edit* On the bright side the D740X's quoted seek time is LOWER than the 60GXP series (8.5 ms for the Maxtor vs 8.7 for the IBM)

Quoted maybe.
And yes, The DMax+60 is also quoted at 8.5 which is lower than the 8.7 on the 60GXP
But go to http://www.storagereview.com/ and you'll see the 60GXP handily beats the DMax+60, I think Maxtor is exagerating their 8.5s quite a bit.

Don't get me wrong, they are good drives, but I don't know that they will take the 60GXP down as speed champ.

Just so recently the 100 GB drive from Maxtor was the size king. 160 already, that's crazy, Does it have ATA/133 or better and how much is the price. I can imagine that at this rate I will be buying a 1 TeraByte Drive by the end of the year.

Thanks for the info.
