the photo is kind of funny too if you look at the nametags.

Gay - Dix.

Retarded editors are letting things slip by, possibly on purpose, with all of the Tyson Gay articles. I swear they almost always have some kind of comical innuendo when covering track meets where Gay or Dix ran.

Dix comes from behind! Gay bent over and gasping for air at finish!

"I didn't have it in me," admits Gay.

"Oh, YES you did," inserts Dix.

That story writes itself, it's too bad they weren't more subtle as that would have been funnier.

'Tired Gay succumbs to Dix in the End' would have been slightly better.

That's funny as heck, but good jobs in the journalism industry are hard to find. I'm not sure I would have taken such a chance if I was either the writer or the editors on that story. Even though the story was technically correct and "clean", and the quotes probably accurate, all it takes is one person in management who doesn't share your sense of humor and you are screwed. Reuters must have a pretty liberal funny bone since the story is still up after four days. Two editors did work on it, so I wonder if there was an even more suggestive version up earlier that required the extra editing and additional byline.

I've seen lots of writers hiding jokes in their stories either trying to sneak them by an editors for a laugh, or intending it as a private joke for the copy editor to find and edit out before publication. Every now and then one get through to publication and heads often roll. A sports writer friend buried the single line "Happy Birthday, Joe" in the middle of a minor league baseball story on the sports editor's birthday. Things got busy and the joke was missed until half the newspaper run had been printed. Both got chewed on pretty good by our editor-in-chief the next day.
