I have 35k miles on my Mazda3i and i see the tread warning line on my Toyos were flush with the tire. This was on the outside most groove.

I thought 35k is too soon especially since I rotate my tires.

Then I notice the middle grooves had shallower warning lines. I'm assuming this is the real tread warning line.

If so, then what's that outside line?

I think those are probably rotation indicators. Tread wear indicators that tell you the tires are worn out are usually 1/16".

When the tires wear down to the rotation bars, you're supposed to rotate them to another axle.

I don't know anyone who actually uses them....most folks just go by mileage.

thx. but that means it's only useful once unless tires come with different height rotation bars?

Yeah, 35k isn't bad on factory. We're passing 36k on our civic and we need to get new tires this fall

I have 35k on my Mazda3 and just got new tires - mine were past the wear line. I'd say get new.

Sure it's actually shallower? It's possible you were running underinflated, and wearing on the outside of your tires more than the inside.

if you're wearing more on the outside, you're probably underinflated. and you need to go by what is the most shallow, because that is where you'll have a failure, and also where the car has been putting its weight. if you wear to any indicator, you need new tires. as others have said, 35k is what you should expect from many tires, especially factory tires. there's a reason all those certified-used cars on dealer lots have new tires... it's because the originals were bald when the lease came back!

ah. i don't think those are what we talk about when we talk about wear indicators. usually there is a strip or band around the circumference that will start to show when the tire gets REALLY low. those tires aren't really low yet. i think you can still drive on them for a while without worrying about it.
