Have an '07 Chevy Avalanche, still have original tires on it. Getting new wheels and tires. Wheels are set, but I thought I'd field some recommendations on tire brand and specific models.

It's a 4x4 and I do go up in the snow to ski often during the winter, otherwise I don't do much off roading.

Currently I was just getting some Goodyear Eagle II's, but I really don't know much about tires or brand names (other then the big guys like Goodyear, Michelin etc). Would like to keep cost reasonable. Reviews on the Eagle II seem to be reasonable.

Anyone care to add their opinions?

Get whatever Costco has. The one thing I know about Costco is that they don't carry cheap crap that sucks.

Is there really that big a difference in tires? When I replaced the all season tires on my Civic a couple years back, I bought the cheapest tires Walmart had. They seemed to work fine. There was nothing obviously wrong about them except for how long the tires are expected to last. My winter tires are also the cheapest tires Walmart had. I've been using them for about 4 years now and they seem to work pretty good. I haven't skidded into any cars yet.

Obligatory Continental ExtremeContact DWS plug here, many ATG drivers think these are the greatest tires ever.

My opinion is that dedicated snows are worth every penny if that's what you're going to be playing in. Hard to beat Blizzacks, X-ice IIs for snow performance, and WinterForce tires don't sacrifice much for a significantly lower cost.

I would not cheap out on tires as they are the single most important part on your car/truck.

Well I'm a tire novice here, so size I'm not sure, whatever is stock I know I'm sticking around with that, my wheel size is increasing slighty to 20, but the width is barely increasing. Just looking for a fairly normal type tire for daily use, the snow season doesn't last long enough (nor does it snow where I actually live) to justify an extra set of winter wheels, because I still use the truck as my daily driver.

If you could provide more detail about what you want that would help. Also try TireRack and read up on tire reviews, there are a lot of tires in the size you want, 275/55R20.

I'll check it out, really I am looking for something more daily driver friendly, but would be OK to use in the snow. Not sure if that really narrows it down. I haven't had much time to research specific reviews yet, hopefully I can Sunday afternoon.

I had some Yokohama Geolandar H/T-S on my Xterra and they were a great tire for the money. I had about 17K on them before selling the vehicle. they probably would have gone about 50k miles.

JCH13 thanks for the link. Checked out the tires and so far I'm leaning towards changing from the GY Eagles to either the Yokohama Parada Spec-X or the Firestone Destination ST, with a preference towards the Firestones.

Ideally looking for something with a decent tread for the snow/rain days but also nothing that will increase the sound in the cabin from what I have currently while around the same ~$160ish per time price tag.
