Tire question

over the weekend, I had 2 tires slashed on my specV :| and now it looks like I cant find any of those same tires. (seems like they were discontinued, i'm still looking into it.)

so what i want to do is get 2 nice tires, put them on the front and move my 2 good original tires to the back. will this work? is it okay to mix and match tires as long as they are the same size or will that mess up stuff like breaking and turning and everything?

insurance will give me about 350-400 dollars for the cost of the ruined tires.


edit:
they are 215/45 ZR-17 tires.

As long as they're the same size as the others and you have a pair of each one, you should be ok. If your new tires aren't the same spec as the other ones (like Z-rated rubber, etc) you're going to lose a little power and your grip on the road won't be that great in turns.

not unless you area front wheel drive car it think. Near tired should be in front. Has they si more wear on them there. Unless of course you are a rear wheel drive vehicle and you smoke your tires a lot.

OK guys, this is why:

It does not matter if it is a FWD or RWD car. You shuld ALWAYS mut the best tires in the rear because:
If you have bad tires in the rear the car can loose grip in the rear (when wet and under braking for example) and you will spin around!

It's that easy!

And you do not have to drive like an idiot to loose control. Read 'WET WEATHER CONDITIONS'.

Edit: All cars can be set up to have oversteer or understeer. It does not matter if it is RWD or FWD.
And if he's having trouble with oversteer he is driving like an idiot anyway. LOL!!

I couldn't stay away from this thread so....
So you're saying there are no FWD cars with oversteer?
Errrm, nothing personal but do a background check on car setups.

Ok basically it's like this:

Go around a fast corner in the rain with a little throttle. If in Mustang you get oversteer. if in Sentra spec V you get understeer. In this case you want the grip on the front wheels.

And when braking? He has ABS so his wheels will not skid. WHen braking straight on most braking force comes from the front wheels, not the rear, so you want the best wheels on the front. Given that he has ABS and won't be skidding his rear will not jerk to the left and right like it would if he locked the hand brake.

i have to agree with skoorb.. front wheel drive = understeer.. or so i've always been taught.

He's driving a rainy day on a nice highway, suddenly something makes him need to avoid a collision and steer to either left or right. The bad tires in the rear looses grip and start aquaplaning. What happens then...... he spins around, ABS or not.

same situation, with bad tires in the front:

front tires loose grip, car is still going to spin around and cause trouble.

The good tires at the front, responsible for the majority of stopping power, allow him to stop just in time.

Just don't do what I did on my old 69 LeMans. I had radials on the back and bias on the front. That tanks wouldn't drive in a straight line if I was doing anything over 30mph. It floated all over the place. Shortly after I got it, though, it got new rims and tires. Man it was scary doing 55!

consider this.

i'm not getting 'cheap' tires... i dont think they make cheap 17 inch Z rated tires. I'll be spending at least 100 dollars per tire no matter what.

the main concern is that they still wont be the same as the others.... as long as i can mix and match tires and get by for a while i'll be okay. then this summer when i get some more money from working, i'll buy the other 2 tires.

He has ABS so he will be able to stear when he brakes. If the tires in the back is bad he can still loose tracktion and spin around.

Another scenario.If the highway is dry and nice he will have even more grip if the tires are worn, LOL. That's why racecars use slicks.

i have a friend with a neon who setup oversteer on purpose just to feel what it is like in a FWD car. All he had to do was put high rate springs on the back. It was fun to see an FWD car loosing its tail in a corner :)
