Tire places

Had a tire going flat so I took it to Americas Tire. The guy inspected my tires, and after a little back and forth talking he said they pretty much are budget tires and not that great. They're Good Year Regatta(sp?) 2's. I know they weren't super tires when I bought them, but Just Tires told me they were very solid. I accidentally let it slip how much I paid for them and he said "ohh, they're honestly only worth about $70 each" I paid $125 each. I had a spare on and one that was flat at the time so I couldn't really shop around. for the best tire or deal, I just got it done so I could drive again. My current flat isn't fixable because the sidewall has a tear in it, he said from driving it with low pressure. They recommended a tire to me which was a Arizona something, a company that's owned by Good Year. They claim it's a very decent tire blah blah blah. I feel like if I get them replaces and end up going to another tire store I'll get the same story about "oh these tires aren't that great"


Does anyone here have experience with the Regtta 2? I don't have a lot of miles on them, and I don't drive hard, I don't even speed. I think they're 60,000 mile tires. And if I'm lucky I have 25k on them.

AFAIK he's right.

Michelin and Yokohama make the best tires AFAIK, particularly when it comes to snow tires. Good Year and Bridgestone are more budget-oriented brands.

goodyear and bridgestone both make some awesome tires as well...

Just plain wrong. Bridgestone's Blizzak line is widely acknowledged to be among the best in snow tires. Both Goodyear and Bridgestone have some excellent lines, as do Michelin and Yokohama.

All four also have their "budget" lines of tires that are spectacularly average.

Goodyear's "Regatta" line falls into this "spectacularly average" category. At $125/tire, the OP overpaid for what are nothing more than basic family sedan tires with no sporting pretense. That said, $70/tire is a very low estimate. I would expect a tire like the Regatta to be in the $90 to $100 range. There's nothing at all wrong with them, just that they are pretty basic tires, like all others in their performance class.

Very frankly, if a person is a "point a to point b" driver who drives gently then just about any current tire on the market will be adequate.

many tire lines are very hit and miss- some companies produce some excellent products for some fields but crap in others.

in general, i would rate michelin and goodyear as producing the highest quality, mostly round tires. although i've still seen some bad tires (out of round) from both on occasion.

yokohama also makes a good tire. bridgestone, however, i would not put on a wheelbarrow. i've worked for a firestone and i just cannot say anything good about the quality of their tires, overpriced high-end lines aside.

The Bridgestone Potenza line of tires are great!

Goodyear is used in quite a few race leagues as well. Great tires as well!

Buy your tires online from TireRack and use one of their preferred installers.

Tire salesman are one step below matress salesman. Once they graudate from tire sales they move to matrress sales and then on to used cars.......

I thought that Goodyear and Bridgestone do race tires?

Michelin Pilot Exaltos are, I'm told, the best thing since sliced bread.

Stores always sh*t on things they don't sell. It's to foment fear in the consumer that he should be paying more for their retail markup.

yeah.....when i was getting tires for my mazda3, they guy at town fair tire essenially said. "why do you want to buy dunlop sp sport signatures? they are horrible tires....buy these....they cost less and are ten times better". After saying no, I just left while he tried knocking down the price even more, then he caved in and gave me ludricous amount for dunlop tires.

Anyways....

most tire brands have good lines and bad lines. You have to research it.
