Tips - what is good for those who work in the service industry

I'm going on vacation to Maui soon and want to know what is the acceptable amount to tip with. I remember I used to tip $5 for maids, luggage clerks, taxis, etc. I'm thinking it might be time to increase the standard amount but want to know what others think is a decent tip.
I won't be staying at a super nice hotel or anything (probably $150 a night), will go to local restaurants, and use shuttles/taxis.

What do y'all tip?

I carry my own bags on business, on vacation with a girl, 3-5$ per bag. 20-30% while dining if the service is good.

Seeing as how I make 240 million dollars a year, I tip quite handsomely; a shiny nickle for every bag. If the service is really good, I let them touch me (but not for too long; I don't want to catch poor from them).

I challenge you to find one.

Generally, I tip 13-17% for taxis and restaurants. A few dollars for housekeeping (I don't mess up the hotel rooms.).

I've tried using the 'search' thing, but it tends to bring up every thread ever made.

On a side note, I've decided to tip with candy. Everybody loves candy! :D

Unless it is a really fancy hotel, or they do something really special for you, I think $5 is plenty.

Depends on the place and the quality of service. Generally, $1/bag to the bellhop, $1/day to the valet, and (again) anywhere from $0 to $5/day to the housekeepers, but if we make a mess of things and they do a good job cleaning it up, they get more...sometimes MUCH more.

Seems like every trip to Hawaii, the hemorraghing of cash starts either with the shuttle from the parking lot to the airport, or with the skycaps...it doesn't stop until I get home. Everytime I turn around in Hawaii, someone has his hand out for another tip, bellhops, valet parking, restaurant staff, housekeepers, pool staff, every dammed tourist event, grocery baggers...about the only ones who haven't hit us up for a tip are the cops...and that's only because I drive slow on Maui.

(This ain't the Mainland...SLOW DOWN!)

Thank you!

I want to be frugal, but not crazy cheap. I think I might go with $5 (higher if the situation calls).
