Tips for upgrading a cell phone?

I have a crappy ol' Nokia 5165 with AT&T in SoCal. I don't use the phone a lot but I want something more modern. What should I look out for? I guess I'll have to pay activation but that should be it right, since I just want to keep my current calling plan?

The upgrade page at www.attwireless.com only showed 3 crappy phones. I guess I'll be better off going to a local AT&T store?
