Tips for display adapter goofieness?

I have an ATI Rage Pro based PCI display adapter, the Xpert 98. It's graced with an incompatability: to work as a display adapter in a multi-adapter Win2K system, it has to be primary.

I also have a Matrox G200, which I want primary. It doesn't care, this thing has to be the best, most stable, and best looking (in 2D) card I've ever owned.

So, I have the system boot PCI first, and have Win2K use the G200 as the primary monitor. All should be happy, but I get all kinds of goofy crap going on. The G200 wont fire up, shutdowns/restarts don't work. Drivers are all the newest though, and I've changed the BIOS to not assign IRQ's to VGA. This seemed to help a bit, things are less erratic. Currently, the ATI card has no IRQ and the G200 has it's own unshared IRQ (10 or 11).

I'd like tips, ideas, nudges. What else should I try? I'm about to spend a couple more hours on this, pulling other cards and playing around to see if the shutdown/boot problem is something else (can't be sure yet). Other then that, input please?

Here is the machine. <- "Work"

Have you taken the ATi card out to see if the Matrox card alone is acting silly?

Yeah, it seems to act fine with just the Matrox, although I haven't tested to too much (to see if things aren't actually cropping up).

I'm so used to dual displays, that not having them isn't even an option. I end up doing little/no troublshooting without them both enabled. I'll live with boot/shutdown problems, as long ans things are stable within Windows.. if I have to.
