Hey guys, i have an interview in about 3 hours for an internship. Its on campus and its only working at the computer helpdesk but im getting paid. Just want to know if any of u know some tips that might help out, im supposed to explain how it will benifit my major(compsci - concentration in systems software) and there isnt a whole lot i can think of.

it wont help your major. if you are a copsci major dont fill your resume with helpdesk jobs, they will only help you get a helpdesk job after you graduate.

find a software company around you and beg them for a chance to work there.

but if they are specifically asking how it will help out your major....helpdesk job....experience working with a wide array of problems and experience with people to enhance your people skills is my advice.

i know it wont really help my major that much but i would like a job and i would rather deal with computers than cleaning dishes like i did this summer, and since its on campus its just easier.. and if i can get credits for it theres another bonus

and yes they asked specifcally how it would help my major

if you are set on it then say something like:

<BS MODE ON>

By working the helpdesk, i will be able to get an insight on how customers percieve our software systems and better understand how we could design better applications that would address the current and future needs of our customers. The experience that i gain here will help apply the same process to any job that i take when i graduate college. I believe working with customer's requirements are very important to making great software and i want to be able to learn how customers work and think about the products they use.

</BS MODE ON>

good luck man.

some programming will help out your resume, make sure you focus on those projects you did and keep the tech support stuff to a minumum.

the thing that bugs me about this world is that most people actually buy that nonsense. nobody has a bs filter. actually maybe that's a good thing for me because bs can get you far in life.

Well as a hiring manager that's what you expect to hear. Would you rather hear that or "I plan on jacking off to internet porn all the time and in a normal day, I'll probably only do less than an hour of actual work"

How about something like being able to investigate and come up with solution to provide a better software/protection against idiot users.

help desk is easy to get, I worked at the Kellogg School of Management (#4 business school in the US) for a qtr and I walked in he looked at my resume and hired me. No questions about why I wanted the job. These are student jobs they don't except that mcuh

i take it u meant expect, and i figured as much

What I do is on my resume at the top my objective is to get a position in blah blah blah in order to gain practical experience while contributing to the companie's business objectives. So, at the end of the interview when they ask what questions do you have I ask them what their business goals and objectives are and say something like well if you noticed on my resume I said I wanted to contribute to your business objectives. I can't do that if I don't know what they are.

That and in a technical interview they want to see how you think and what kinds of questions you ask...so if you don't know something tell them how you're thinking about it and what you should be looking at...other than that the touchy feely non technical interviews are cake because they always ask the same types of questions...strengths weaknesses, where do you see yourself in 5 years..that sort of thing
