Tipping sucks, get a real economy where that price is built into your bills ;)

It's simple for the rest of us, we pay the bill and everyone is happy.

If your service sucks, complain to the manager, and someone gets their ass beat or they get fired. Their wage represents their level of service and dedication, and if they don't like it, rather than screaming, ranting, raving, and generally behaving like spoiled brats (as your restaurant staff seem wont to do at the slightest provocation) , they get another job...

I accept that state minimum wage laws are at least partly acceptable for this situation, but why not make a stand for a reasonable minimum wage, and end this ridiculous situation whereby you have to pay some kid an extra arbitrarily determined percentage just to get him/her to do the job he's/she's employed to do?

We prefer to tip a little or a lot as an indicator of the perceived service, it?s a reward system. Do a great job and make more money or do a sh!tty job and get jack. Pretty simple if you ask me..

BTW: Mr Pink, your table is ready. 😛

 and here's me seeing all these threads where idiot wait staff are hating on people who don't pay their 27% tip, or whatever they want these days (or maybe just blacklisting them for paying 2% too little, because that makes sense).

If wait staff were paid minimum wage, the price of the food would skyrocket to the point where no one would be able to afford to go out and eat like they do now.

Tipping should not be expected to the extent it is now, but ... realistically... it is the only viable way to keep prices down and servers well paid.

Would she be happier if she was given a full wage so each week her pay is much more consistent?

America is a culture of entitlement. Everybody thinks they are entitled to something. Everybody thinks America and the world owe them something. So tipping isn't going to change. Also, I believe that people like waiters and such who work off tips are not even required to be paid minimum wage. I don't have a problem with tipping so much as I have a problem with them being more or less expected or "mandatory" almost. I especially hate restaraurants that add an xx% gratuity for parties of x or more people automatically. That's just total BS. Because tipping IS supposed to be an incentive to do a better job and provide better service. When the server knows they are guaranteed that xx% tip regardless, it provides them no incentive to provide you the best possible service at all. And it shows.

EDIT: And a tip for everyone - It's always a good idea if you ARE going to complain to the manager about your server to always be polite until AFTER you have eaten your meal and only then lodge your complaint. Because waiters with bad attitudes WILL do stuff to your food.

Um, not just no, but HELL NO.

Tipping makes the waiter answer to only one person: YOU

If you want to see what non-tipping service looks like, go to your local Best Buy, Circuit City, or other non commission retail store. Better yet, try to get personalized service at a fast food restaurant.

NO THANK YOU!

Tipping makes the customer the boss. The waiter's sole job then becomes pleasing the customer. NOT meeting sales goals, pleasing the manager, or kissing the manager's ass. Tipping makes the waiter kiss YOUR ass.

Tipping is the BEST way to ensure the best, personalized service for the customer.

I would not want it any other way.

Finally, adding tips into the cost of the meal will cost the customer MORE. Because wage taxes must be matched with taxes by the employer. This will effectively DOUBLE the waiter costs to the customer.

Folks, you will be paying that tip either way. Why not keep the control with you, AND save money?

Um you still need to 'pay' the tip (or should at least). And like the OP said, it works like that in the rest of the world. So how are they functioning?

Not all state minimum wage laws are to blame. Some states here in the US do not allow employers to pay less for their food-industry employees. Waiters and waitresses make at least minimum wage just like everyone else's minimum wage.

lol....tipping is a personal thing. What seems high to one person might be normal to another. For the record I usually tip between 10%-30% depending on the service. If the percentage or pay is flat there isn't much incentive to do much more than absolutely required, serving is hard work dealing with crappy people and I think they should have the opportunity to earn a little more.

She might be, but I like how it works when I report our income to the IRS. 😉

paycheck + tips = over $600/week.

and she earns every penny.

This is a grossly untrue statement and is disproven every single day.

:Q

How do we manage to go out and eat in such savage and backward, non-tipping countries such as Australia, without bankrupting our poor backward souls?

The only reason they have it built into the check in Australia is because everyone there's a criminal, and any cash tips left on the table would be scooped up by another deported convict in the blink of an eye.

I really hope that all the people whining about tipping have actually had to support themselves with tips. Tipping is basically a merit-based pay system, if you're good you make more than those who suck. It can be a difficult job depending where you work.

If you can't support yourself with the job you've chosen, then I'd suggest getting a different one instead of taking it out on the customer. 🙂

So wait. . .your wife thinks that people like him suck because if what he proposed actually happened then she could no longer continue with her tax evasion? What in the hell makes people in the food service industry think that they should be any more exempt from taxes than anybody else? Guess what. NOBODY else likes to pay taxes any more than you do!

that's the theory, but it has little to do with reality.
