Tipping Pizza Delivery

I'm 20 years old and going to college and I work part-time delivering pizzas. It's a good job and it's great making tip money, but tipping has gone down...at least around my area. Yeah all drivers get reimbursed for gasoline, and that's what the delivery charge is for, but what people don't realize is that driving your own car also means much much more frequent:

Battery Changes
Brake maintenance
Tire changes
Oil Changes
Devaluation of car
Anything else that pops up

All of this stuff can add up and be pretty expensive and when you're not getting tipped well it can become quite frustrating. Waitresses and bar tenders really don't have any expenses yet they seemed to get tipped way more even if the waitress only makes 2-3 trips to your table or if a bar tender serves just a couple drinks. I'm trying not to be greedy or bitchy and I don't think that tipping should be mandatory, however, I would really like to get the word out that a nice 2-3 dollar tip really helps out a driver much more than a waitress or bar tender or somebody working at a coffee shop...because that money is basically essentail to their job.

Wah, complain to your employer about that $1 delivery charge. If you don't think that's eating into your tip your kidding youself.

You have two options. Deal with it or find a new job.

For the record, because I know I'll be asked, I tip 2-3 for a single pizza delivered from about ~3 blocks away. I'm not cheap, but I see why others are.

I usually tip about $5 per delivery; but that of course depends on whether the delivery guy parks in my driveway or on my lawn; whether he's on time or late; and whether the delivery driver is a really hot chick.

edit: To expand on what Phoenix 86 said, I agree that delivery charges eat into tips. When I order a pizza, I have a set price in my mind that I'm willing to pay. THe difference between that price and the pizza = tip for the driver. If the company wants to shrug off some of their costs on me by imposing a fee, I take it out of the tip. I know it's not fair to the driver, but in the end, I am the customer and I have my max price. How else is it gonna work?

Yes but we realize that your job consists of....... delivering pizzas. Its not rocket science.

The federal gasoline reimbursement accounts for vehicle maintenece and depreciation.
Your car does not cost 48cents per mile in gasoline.

The delivery charge cuts into tips sometimes. Not a day goes by where I don't have some prick customer telling me about how he's not going to tip me because we charge for delivery. And they always say "Complain to your manager if you dont' like it". Get this - our managers have complained to our franchise owner, and he has already said it's not going to change. It's not like EVERY other place doesn't charge for delivery too.

That said - I keep track of who tips and who doesn't - and guess who gets top priority 😉 The system works - I have happy repeat cutomers, and I get tipped well. I've been averaging #75 bucks a night in tips lately for a 6 hour shift, Fridays and Saturdays, I usually break $100. Give good service to those that tip, it'll pay off in the end.

And we care because? A monkey can deliver pizza and costs less money to the employer. You're lucky you still have the job.

I ordered 2 pizzas from hungry howies the other night, and they had a $3 delivery charge, WTF! The total was $15.xx and I gave the guy a $20, and he was started walking away! He expected a $5 tip on top of a $3 delivery charge? Ha! I asked for $3 back.

Pizza guys got reimbursed for gas before that delivery charge was there. You are aware of federal law that allows for this? I think it's about $.40/mi this year.

Pnwed? Heh, nice response either way.

I started a thread a while back about how cheap I was tipping the Chinese delivery guy. I've been a better tipper since being berated in that thread. 😀

Edit: and how long have you been at it that you notice a sudden drop in tips? Maybe it's seasonal with folks spending a lot on Xmas gifts.

I coulda sworn we just covered the Pizza Delivery Tip issue not too long ago.

Anyway, I tip 5 bucks. I found out the hard way that good service goes to good tippers. Bad tippers are lucky to see their pizza before bedtime. I also found out that the delivery folks inform to each other on the good and bad tippers.

FYI, its a Pizza Hut, about 5 blocks away.

I actually never tipped one pizza person because of the delivery charge. They said it cost 3 extra to deliver when you could walk to the pizza place in less than ten minutes. I didnt know any better and just figured the 3 bucks were a tip anyways.

The Delivery Charge sucks. It will cut into the poor driver's tips...like it or not...the driver's are going to have to deal with it. I'm not going to tip MORE simply because thier employer is screwing them. I tip my standard rate, between 15-20% depending on service, but that's BEFORE any delivery charge.

SO...if the pizza order is $20 I'll tip $4 for good service, minus the $1 delivery charge and the pizza guy gets $3. I feel for the delivery guy but pizza is expensive as it is, I'm sticking with my original gameplan.

tipping for food delivery in our house is totally dependent on the delivery guy.

if he shows up to my house with his radio blasting, and I open the door to a kid who is sloppily dressed (there is a difference between getting messy at work and wearing the same street clothes for days) and has no manners, he gets a very small tip. If a kid arrives, parks properly and looks like he cares how he dresses, shows manners ... he will get a fat tip.

I deliver for pizza hut... It's a pretty fun job, but I hate driving my car everywhere, I don't want to run it into the ground.

I don't know about other delivery drivers, but when we don't have any deliveries we have to wash dishes. We are THE dishwashers. If we are not there to do dishes, the dishes wait until we get there to be done. This is true even until the wee hours of the morning. The delivery drivers job is far and away the hardest (of pizza hut employees). Rushing to deliver pizzas the cooks make, than getting back having the waitresses getting pissed at you because the silverware isn't cleaned yet or no dishes/out of pans/whatever else. (we don't have 'dishwashers' at our pizza hut, except human ones). The best part is they put the sink down just a couple inches lower than it should be so I have to bend over just a tick but by the end of the night my back KILLS!

A good tip really, REALLY helps to offset some of the frustration that comes with that.

We have a deployment schedule at my store - every driver has a task assigned to them on our Deployment Schedule.

Each driver gets one task, be it stocking the coke cooler, washing dishes (we don't have those pans you guys use for your crust - thank god), taking out the nightly trash, cleaning the bathrooms and putting the chairs in the lobby on the tables, mopping the back of the store, restocking the makeline, etc.

Our drivers are all cross trained - they make pizzas when they're not delivering, they answer phones, and some even slap dough.

Our delivery charges are $1.50. That helps pay all the drivers for gas...I believe that is also pizza hut's delivery charge. The rest is for the service and car maintence. We get paid 25 cents a mile which pays for a little more than gas and maybe oil changes, but the thing of it though are those big expenses and major repairs that have to get done otherwise we can't work because we can't ride our bike or take the bus on deliveries.

I'm not trying to sound like a little girl when I complain, but I have just noticed a lot of "oh are we supposed to tip them?" questions. This is contrary to waitresses I know that will come back with 40+ dollars on a 4 hour shift making maybe 2-3 trips to a table. I hear a lot of rude people say over the phone that the driver isn't getting as big of a tip because of the delivery charge. Think of it as the same service waitresses offer, except transporting it across town...if they do a good job...tip them...and remember there is no charge for waitresses because they don't need gas to bring a couple of plates to a table. Oh and one more thing...if the drivers late, most of the time it's because somebody screwed up in the kitchen and had to remake the order.

Leave a job that is completely flexible with me taking college courses that I need tghat are only available at certain times that might be offered 1 quarter a year and that gives me a guaranteed amount of hours I need each week?

Honestly, I don't mean to sound like this is a MAJOR problem, but I just wanted to get the word out that it is polite to tip drivers unless the driver screws up or is impolite, even if it is just a couple of dollars. I have nothing more to add.
