As Im sure most of you have noticed, tips at POS transactions are becoming more and more common. I mean, for ordinary things. What do you guys think about this? Out of control? I agree with the quote from the article Im linking.

‘I can’t do these interactions anymore’: Customer says tipping in the U.S. is ‘getting out of hand,’ sparking debate (msn.com)

"Tipping should only be for sit down restaurants,: another wrote. "When someone actually serves you not when you order coffee or a donut over the counter."
"Unless ur a waiter or driver No tip. I mean should I tip the cashier at Home Depot?" another stated.

Ive traveled to many countries around the world, and with exception of bell boys or taxis, tipping is not expected. This is purely a United States phenomenon,

General rule is if I could do it myself I don't tip. Taking my order is not a service I consider worthy of a tip. I would send the order myself if you let me, less chance of screw ups.

It's probably just me but might there be some correlation between the crypto boom and counter tip jars? I mean, these folks see wealthy douche bros sinking billions into worthless currencies and figure, 'well, may as well see if I can get my slice of that pie.'

Typically $1 per drink if its a decent place. If I was at a dive bar drinking bottles of beer, not so much.
Same here. Maybe 2 bucks if the barmaid is cute. Being cute should always count for something. Maybe not much, but something.

I don't really go out much since I have a fairly well stocked home pharmacopeia. And then only on "off" nights like Wed. and maybe Thurs. I love Stella Artois but can't get psyched to drink much at home. Several months ago I did go thru a Carolans Irish Crème phase. Not sure what that was about.

I tip at probably one place I drink at. But that place has people in uniforms that bring me drinks on trays and fancy snacks.
I ain't tipping at the pub no matter how good it is!

In states like California which does not have Tipped employee minimum wage - the person serving you is probably making $18/hr base wage + tips.

Selects custom, amount 0. Thank you and have a nice day!

I've noticed that this sort of attitude makes it take FAR longer to get a second round of drinks when the bar is packed. (unless you're a hot blonde!)

has a study been done about level of service between city/states that dont have a separate min wage for servers and those that do?

also, study that compares tip amounts between city/states that dont have a separate min wage for servers and those that do?

Tipping at a bar around here it is more like 2 bucks per drink. It's only fair, I was tipping a buck for 20 years I think considering all the costs that have gone up in 20 years, it's a good thing.

Having done work as a delivery driver for Dominos, I've developed a conflicted response in the situation in the very rare times I order delivery. Last time was maybe 2 years ago prior to trying to give a damn about diet in any way. I think I had a Dominos gift card and used it all up, so the tip wound up only being 1.20 something dollars for the driver.
The conflict being not wanting to spend a cent more necessary(I think it is safe to safe a good deal of Chinese get raised with this) vs giving a little for the driver's time and vehicular sacrifice.

Generally $3 is enough to make a driver a happy camper. $2 is neutral, $1 is negative, $0 is a twinge of rage.

Also, companies tacking on delivery fees naturally entails less tips.

It's probably just the default software for the POS systems they use.

I mean I agree it's stupid, but I just click the "no tip" button and move on.

Just like with those stupid donation buttons at the grocery store.

Dunno I don't even read em. I don't care what it's for I'm not giving a multi million dollar company a few cents that they then donate on their behalf. They can do that with their own money.
And they get the associated tax write-off. When I realized this it pissed me off and I stopped.

On topic, pay people more so tipping isnt required.
Also agreed with purbeast that is part of the PoS system

I'm generous in tipping if/when the service I get is great/above and beyond my expectations. Most usually in restaurants and getting my haircut. Beyond those two probably nothing, but will depend on the situation.
