Tipping a sole proprietor?

I get my haircut at a barbershop, and the owner is the only employee. I've always tipped him a couple bucks each time (and my parents always tipped him a couple bucks when they paid for my haircuts...I've been going there for a long time 🙂).

Is this the right thing to do? Obviously it's too late to change my method, but I think I read somewhere that you shouldn't tip a sole proprietor.

I guess the theory is that he sets his own wage and so if he really need to give himself more money, he'd raise his prices.

But I always tip my guy. He's good at what he does, and I feel that the price is well below the quality of his work, so I pay him more.

Agreed. At $16 for a haircut, I don't mind a couple extra bucks going in his pocket. Best haircut I've ever had. 🙂

It's not taboo to tip the proprietor anymore, unless it specifically states it somehwere in their store 😀

You always have to tip the person who washed your hair, though.

Definitly. I usually give em $2-$3. She does my hair well, and has conversations with me. Of course they deserve something. I mean you tip a waiter and all they do is bring you your food. They dont make it or sit and talk to you
